That’s really sad. I wonder what happened to cause that
Dublin Live has a different version of this story, claiming he was found dead on his bed with a phone in his hand
He died in Ko Tao which has the nickname Murder Island which isn’t very reassuring.
Sad, sketchy giving the location, hope all is resolved justifiably.
I’ve spent a lot of time in Thailand over the years. But there is a really strange vibe in Koh Tao. It’s hard to describe, but definitely not a place I wanted to stay too long in.
RIP this poor man and sympathies to his family.
I spent around a month in Kho Tao approx 2007ish. Got ripped off by a scooter hire place and had very little money for scuba etc but overall it was really nice.Very underdeveloped compared to other islands. Good memories. Sounds like it has chsnged a lot since.
Backpacked a ton in my early 20s.
I got seriously screwed over by a scooter rental company on that island. They took my passport and wanted tons of money for a scratch on the scooter, they threatened to call some gang if I didn’t pay up.
I was going to go to the police but I read up on the stories about corruption on the island so I decided not to dig myself in even deeper water.
I ended up paying out like 190 Euros i think at the end of it after me basically crying.
Only place I’ve ever had an issue renting a scooter.
I was very young at the time.. prob 21-22? I was also solo travelling so it was really daunting and upsetting having the withdraw nearly all of my travel money which was suppose to do me for the final week of my trip. I eventually had to get a loan off my mate.
I took away some valuable lessons from that experience, never ever ever hand over a passport when abroad, especially in developing countries.
Just realised some other Redditor posted a ver similar comment on this thread lol.
Most likely, it was alcohol, drugs, or he got the benz from diving.
The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust is a charity that brings Irish people home after incidents abroad. Hopefully, they can help his family here.
