Zuckerberg’s Meta to end US fact-checking: Why and what next? • FRANCE 24 English

Scoop is FRANCE 24’s international media show. This week, we look at Meta’s decision to end its massive US-based fact-checking operation on its platforms Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Experts say some changes were needed, but there is concern the radical overhaul could lead to a rise in political disinformation. Many conservatives welcomed the move but saw it as too little, too late, while liberals accused CEO Mark Zuckerberg of making the decision to cosy up to US President-elect Donald Trump. For analysis, we speak to Mark Frankel, head of communication and policy at Full Fact.

  1. Freedom of speech is vital to democracy. Europe is obsessed with censorship rather than cultivating public discourse. Stop being authoritarians!

  2. Many countries have hate speech laws… I suggest those countries enforce them… with prejudice.

People should also delete their accounts (or blank them to the point where they are really useless for advertising)

  3. In a world where everything is done digital ly ,these very powerful tec-billionaires and companies have immense power in their hands beyond anyone's imagination. They should be checked and regulated very carefully or possibly switched off if they are used for wrong purposes.

  4. Zuckerberg is merely pandering to Trump's MAGA supporters. He fell out with them after banning their hero from Facebook at the end of his first presidency. He is unlikely to make the same mistake again this time around, (especially now that his nemesis and rival, Elon Musk has considerable sway in the new administration).

  5. Mainstream media should reflect that for many people, in many cases, *they* are misinformation.
Take the Ukraine war coverage for example. Whatever you may believe about that conflict, it’s a simple fact that most Western media outlets don’t even pretend to be balanced. By all means have an editorial line, but at the same time provide us with news, not views.

  6. Zuckerberg is an actor. He doesn't look like the real one. It's CGI. It's fake. It's all part of the movie script controlled by the White Hat Military. Trump is playing 5D chess. He's always 5 steps ahead taking down the Cabal.

  7. How can anyone trust a mortal that thinks he's Hercules? He's nothing without those curly locks. Search "Greek god statues" and you'll see, the resemblance is unmistakable.

  8. Oh, noooooo! Who will rid us of our pesky freedom of speech? Or at least, rid us of those who disagree with us? 🙄 Get a grip, people.

  9. Meta has clearly been threatened, cajoled and bullied into adopting this measure. Nothing good will come of it. It is strange how those who accuse people of forcing their 'narrative' or 'agenda' are oblivious to what Donald Trump is doing. He is the epitome of forcing a narrative and agenda. All under the premise and pretence of allowing 'free speech'. People will learn to regret allowing this to happen and all I can hope is that no one gets hurt in the process.

  10. Western governments have a monopoly on misinformation. They despise opposing views. This is a good move by Zuck. If you need some billionaire to “fact check” for you maybe you shouldn’t be on the platform.
