The population of Luxembourg City grew to just over 136,000 at the end of last year, the capital’s mayor Lydie Polfer said on Tuesday, rising at a slower pace than in previous years.

The population increased by 1,494 during the year and stood at 136,208 people on the last day of 2024, Polfer told the City Breakfast, the city council’s monthly meeting with the press.

Growth is slowing compared to previous years, with the population increasing by 1,936 people. In 2022 and 2021, the city’s population swelled by an additional 4,264 and 3,986 people respectively.

A total of 2,969 people who failed to respond to correspondence were removed from the city population register during 2024, Polfer explained on Thursday. “During the coronavirus pandemic, we wrote to all citizens several times to offer them free masks. When we got undeliverable mail back, we tried to find out why. And these people will be taken off the registration list,” she said.

The statistics for 2024 also included 1,185 births and 647 deaths. Because the country’s main hospitals are located in the capital, a total of 5,971 babies were born and 1,687 people died in Luxembourg City last year, though not all resided in the city.

A total of 8,885 residents left Luxembourg City to live in another municipality, while a further 4,304 people moved in the opposite direction.
