SS: Some Brexiteers are expressing growing alarm over the European Union’s advancements toward a Defence Union and the prospect of a European army. These developments, which have accelerated in recent years and months, are seen as a significant step toward deeper integration—a goal they opposed but will happen regardless.
The EU has made considerable strides in its defence policy, including initiatives like the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), the European Defence Fund (EDF), and increased coordination and integration among states on military projects. This growing cooperation aims to reduce reliance on the United States, create a more autonomous European defense capability and eventually a full-fledged Defence Union. For some Brexiteers there is palpable concern that Britain, now outside the EU, will find itself increasingly isolated in the face of a united European defense apparatus and that it will further marginalize Britain’s influence in European security affairs.
Britain now is in the worst of both worlds. And the situation is not sustainable. A reintegration is inevitable.
Greatest own goal ever scored. Brush public were lied to and to make matters worse those responsible for ensuring it didn’t happen were so damn arrogant they launched a useless campaign to convince people to stay. All around the greatest cock up ever.
It’s easiest to fool the willing.
They’re angry but they have no idea what they’re actually angry at.
An agitated and distressed populace will absolutely punch themselves in the face if they’re convinced it’s the smart thing to do.
Unchecked proliferation of social media has literally reprogrammed citizens in foreign countries. Russia does it covertly, America does it because it has no guard rails on social media or technology.
Bro technocracy rules the earth through smartphone diplomacy.
GB News can get in the bin. All my homies hate GB news.
What exactly are they getting mad at?
Is Starmer somehow acting against what he has been saying in the past? If he isn’t, shouldn’t him being elected reflect that the British people agree with his views?
And beyond that, why are they harping on Brussels/EU trying to become more active in the defence sector? A more streamlined/centralized defence infrastructure could be really helpful in getting Europe’s defences back on track and if the member states want to move in that direction, what’s the issue? If they want out of the European Defence Fund they can advocate to leave it.
The EU should absolutely build up a united defense program. The Russians have demonstrated they are a real security threat to Europe. The republican party has demonstrated that it cant be trusted to defend Europe. They’ve got the GDP and technology to support an extremely potent military force and should absolutely establish one.
For clarity the issue is not that the EU is forming a united Armed Forces and defense policy, brexiters were primarily the ones stating that this was the case in the run up to Brexit and the remainers were the ones saying it wasn’t.
The issue is that the UK is part of this and not independent from it which was the point of Brexit to have an independent economic and security policy from the EU.
A united European army would be an incredible step in the evolution of IR and security.
I personally think that IR and global power structures will evolve towards multinational blocks or -super states- . Which is something a democracy can participate in far more easily than an autocracy.
> I don’t want to alarm anybody, but we’re going in a good direction of strenght and unity.
> If any of you wanted to be alone and vulnerable like the sick herd animal, now’s your chance to voice your concern
Europe has truly fantastic defence contractors. Covering all domains of warfare. If we are to unite and focus on collective European defence (not necessarily a combined European army, but closer cooperation), using European weapon systems is critical to that. We cannot defend ourselves if our weapons need to come from the United States.
More importantly, should Europe take this step, it is very plausible for the UK to enter this hypothetical defence partnership without entering the EU. And it’d be in Europe’s interests due to us being the only other European nuclear armed state.
This is 100% R politics, if Geography was taken into consideration at all, the article would have disproven itself
The British are isles are easily the most defendable islands on the entire planet. This geographical reality, combined with Britains stalwart, high tech navy, make them a juggernaut militarily, even when compared to the *entirety* of the EU!
Any Brexiteer’s who are concerned with being outmatched by a unified EU are looking at this through rose-tinted glasses, they are not considering their true position before becoming worried about the creation of a Brussel’s headed military empire
With Europe in such a state, the unification of army forces would hardly change anything. Their immediate prospects at home have been heavily dashed by this conflict, the loss of hard point infrastructure like fuel pipelines is veritable divestment in the quality of their own lives
Britain has juked the bullet entirely by not being a part of the current EU at all, they don’t even have to consider the EU as it destroys itself, this is undeniably good for her and her people
Who is this guy? The Eu should’ve been had a joint army. They should’ve been had a singular defense policy, and built up continental defense industries. It’s good for the world and their own interests. Can they truly rely on us anymore? Win-Win for everybody.
