ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) – The City of Athens is one of the fastest-growing cities in the state and that is coming with a new challenge.
With so many new people moving into town, even cemetery space is becoming limited.
According to the city’s website, it operates five cemeteries. Four of them are full or reserved.
Mayor Ronnie Marks says the last one has about 3,600 single spots left.
But he says the city currently sells about 350 lots a year, so it will not be long before it’s full.
He and other city leaders are looking for ways to expand while there’s still time.
Athens City Council has already decided single spots can be divided into two if a family wants to take certain steps.
“In June we passed an ordinance that would allow you to have two interments if it is cremation. Two interments in one lot,” Marks said.
Mayor Marks went on to say they also offer dual burials in one lot with one person being buried much deeper with a layer of soil in between the two caskets.
