Greece, N.Y. (WHAM) — A woman who used to work at Michael’s at The Mall at Greece Ridge is accused of stealing credit cards left behind by customers.

Police said store representatives suspected Michelle Fiorino, 44, of Hamlin, of stealing left-behind cards in 2024.

Investigators determined Fiorino used the cards to buy merchandise and gift cards totaling about $8,000 in losses to the victims.

“Essentially, what she did is she bought gift cards that were being sold at the store, and then were using them, and we had that all verified on surveillance video from within the store,” explained Greece Police Captain Michael Perkowski.

Police said evidence recovered during the investigation indicated Fiorino used stolen identification to open credit card accounts in her name.

“There were multiple names associated with this address in Hamlin that we know don’t live there,” Perkowski said. “So if anybody thinks that they had any frauds based on an address in Hamlin, I would tell them to contact the Greece Police Department.”

Police are now urging recent shoppers at the mall to check their credit cards and bank accounts as they work to identify any additional victims. Three have been identified so far.

“I’m guilty of it too. It’s very convenient, but you have to stay diligent. Make sure you check your bank accounts. Make sure you check your credit card accounts and the charges that you see on there the transactions that you see are ones that you can actually account for and that you make,” Perkowski said.

Perkowski said timing is everything in fraud investigations.

“The quicker you identify it, the quicker it can be undone,” Perkowski said. “The longer it goes, the longer it’s going to take to unravel what’s happening, and bring your accounts and your name and your address in good standing.”

Fiorino was arrested Tuesday and charged with two counts of identity theft and two counts of grand larceny. She was released on an appearance ticket.

The investigation continues as detectives work to identify additional victims. Anyone with information is asked to call the Greece Police Department at (585) 865-9200 or email gpdtips@greeceny.gov.
