  1. this wont get far btw , Common defence is specifically outlawed in the Irish Constitution

    >29.4. 9° The State shall not adopt a decision taken by the European Council to establish a common defence pursuant to Article 42 of the Treaty on European Union where that common defence would include the State”.

  2. Should start with states who want to be involved. There won’t be consensus.

  3. Shouldn’t a fiscal union precede a defense union?

  4. I am immensely pleased with this news. Many shields joining together to form a wall.

  5. We established two sets of legislation which evidently contributed to ruin Europes economy. The national and the EUs.
Now we are planning to set up a third level of defense planning, on top of national and NATO.

    What can go wrong?

  6. Very interesting! «Single market for defence». If all of EU bought the same type of hardware to their armies one would be able to reduce cost a lot.

  7. Awesome. Decades after the French rejection, we have now made it to a Project Group. /s

We have to ramp up the speed and start with a coalition of willing states.

  8. That would be nice, or it will be nice – unfortunately it probably won’t work the first time, but the basic idea behind it is strikingly simple. The EU/Europe complements each other with a common security policy component. If we were already at that point, we would simply send troops to Ukraine to support them and kick the Russians out. I have a dream.

  9. What the EU needs is an indipendent quick reaction force, armed to the teeth, of 50-100k men, capable of indipendent action from nation states, answering only to the commission/parliament and to a chain of command dedicated to it.

  10. Another one sizes fits none solution, where countries with perfectly functional armies must weaken them for a single shit army.

  11. The EU needs to properly federalize already. With a more unified state the EU could become the worlds next superpower

  12. I hope that than FCAS and GCAP get merged or we end up again with 2 Fighter programs inside the EU

We really don’t need 2 different fighters which end up doing the same thing anyway

  13. Who’s gonna try to veto this – Hungary and Slovakia?

  14. I think realistic option would be some kind of “coalition of willing”, let say “Europen Defence Union (EDU)”. So willing countries could form a group inside EU, that would have joint military forces under EU flag, joint command and budget (in addition to their own national armies). Final decision making would be made in EU council’s assembly using qualified majority voting, so no unanimity. Members of those council meetings would be defense ministers/head of governments from countries in this coalition (so not all EU countries).

This joint military would have its own military command and Defence commissioner, both appointed by council meeting. Defence commissioner would work in EU commission, maybe not as a “real” commissioner (as those would also have to be appointed by EU parliament).

Forces under this EDU could be used in broader EU’s common defence/foreign policy, if EDU council meeting agrees. This way it would also incease strength of that. But EDU could also work independently. EDU would make cooperation with Nato structures; it would not be part of Nato in itself though.

This way joint military forces could be formed without a total treauty change, that would be a long road and could be blocked by individual countries. But having separate partly overlapping systems is quite typical in Europe though. Like for example Schengen, EU, EEA, Euro and EU customs union are partly separate things currently. This way joint military could be formed, not needing treauty change, but still integrated into EU structures, and no single country could block desicions.

  15. For the next elections coming up in Germany, is European defense a theme/subject discussed? If so, who is for and who is against?

  16. A decision on establishing a group to make a decision whether to decide to do something. How very EU.

  17. I support this also if all the armies are EU controlled if a country acts against the EU (like Hungary or Slovakia right now) the EU can just commissariate those states and deploy the army there if their government refuse to change course, basically this would solve all our problems
