Opinion polls ‘could trigger new independence referendum’ under SNP Scotland exit deal plan | Karen Adam, an SNP MSP, backs idea touted by John Swinney and suggests three positive polls may be enough for vote
Let’s just keep flogging a dead horse instead of using time and resources to fix the actual government spending problems and improving services and infrastructure.
Definitely don’t try and run Scotland in a way to convince people.
Just keep using the same Sturgeon strategy of demanding indyref2 in the hope people are outraged that it isn’t given.
I’m not Scottish, and if it’s what the people want I think they should be allowed a referendum. It just feels like they need to put more effort into showing what an actual independent Scotland will be like. I know there was those white papers, but they seemed a little vague or hopeful on certain details, like currency, rather than having a full plan put forwards.
Again if people want it I think they should have the referendum. It just feels like they’re making similar mistakes to previous years, where things are staying the same and they just hope for a couple of polls to just about point in the “yes” direction.
You can choose whatever criteria you like, Westminster will just say no. The notion that we remain by choice is laughable.
This is so boring now. Can we get rid of these clowns?
It seems thar constant demands for constitutional chaos is much more important to some than actually governing.
I was all for independence but it looks like the world is on the edge of a world war and I don’t think this or within the next 4 years would be the right time.
All these “change my mind first” comments are ridiculous. The question in my mind is do we even have the ability to make choice to begin with? The short answer is no, the long answer is maybe – if it takes the fancy of whatever UK prime minister is in charge at the time.
I want some way of triggering a referendum without WM having the ability to veto and for it to be something we can only access every 7 years or so.
This isn’t going away, plugging your ears and placing more constraints on how it could happen is only making the subject more toxic.
If the SNP were any good, opinion polls would soon become overwhelming.
If.
Sturgeon’s supreme Court case killed this line of thinking.
The SNP can continue to internally agree to whatever new standards it likes, it is irrelevant- the only trigger for a new indie ref is the consent of Westminster.
The long term damage she did to the prospects of an independence referendum with her ultimatum based strategy is huge.
I’m an independence guy, I was an SNP voter until the last GE. I will happily vote yes on Indy 2 if it happened.
But fuck sake, can we actually get to the business of governing our country and trying to improve it? Maybe we can chat about independence AFTER that.
What have the SNP done since the last referendum to put them over the top in terms of support for independence?
We just had a referendum, the last general election was one according to the SNP.
>Swinney has told BBC Scotland News that winning a majority would be a mandate for another referendum and he would “proceed with urgency” as Scotland could only “move on” if it became independent.
So by the First Ministers own logic there is not a mandate for a referendum, and this was when he already watered it down to majority of seats instead of votes…
If we’ve learned one thing, it’s that referendums do not settle arguments.
They’re good for getting a clear mandate on an individual issue to confirm public support (eg the 1975 referendum to confirm the UK’s membership of the EEC at the time) – but they’re useless and divisive when the issue is up in the air.
Examples being the 2014 independence referendum (which has clearly not settled the issue, but has rather entrenched the division between pro-indy and pro-union – look at how hard it is to even get councillors working across that line).
Or the 2026 Brexit referendum, where again, I think it would be fair to say that it sure as hell didn’t settle the question, it just entrenched division. :-/
Great fucking idea let’s divide our people’s even more, why don’t we just roll out the red carpet for russia and China.
