Poland classified as tier 2 country by US, faces restrictions in AI chip imports.

  1. [Broadly and in respect to this being generally more complicated issue]
This what happens when companies / administrations doesn’t understand that once a product is in EU it can be moved freely across the borders. Same goes for products (chips) installed in products… broadly speaking would be as effective as sanctions against Russia are at the moment. Companies just send products to Belarus, Kazakhstan and other former Soviet Republics (now free states), and from there they are moved freely to Russia . Fun! 😉

  2. Parting gift from Poland’s greatest friend, right?

  3. it is a sad truth that Poland has never truly had western allies, as the united states sees us as a pawn, and western european countries look down on us, they don’t see us as equals

can you imagine how the EU would’ve reacted if it was Germany or France that had restrictions placed on them instead? it would’ve been outrage and front-page news, but because it’s the “less important” countries, the EU responded “we have already shared our concerns with the current US administration and we are looking forward to engaging constructively with the next US administration”

  4. It’s fear of your growing tech sector taking from the US economy, doesn’t need much reading into.

Unfortunate though, and you guys will do great regardless, you’re on the up and congrats to you! As an American this is incredibly standard government practice and is the type of thing that’s kept America on top.

As far as the regular people like me, most of us think it’s bullshit and fully support our polish brothers. This just isn’t the type of thing people would take to the streets over.

I want to be very clear because I’ve seen sentiment here that the US wouldn’t support you if Russia invaded and I can tell you we’d burn shit down if you were left in the cold in a situation like that.

It’s a cultural thing, we’re kinda programmed to be bloodthirsty if I’m honest, but it takes really specific triggers, invading one of our allies is one.

Remember Ukraine wasn’t our ally and our government didn’t know how to act until it saw private donations streaming in and they realized it was a smart political move. It was like our government froze and didn’t know what to do until we all started throwing cash at them.

  5. As if we’ve ever been perceived as anything else than a speed bump between russia and Germany. I hope that’s not the sign of haggling between the US and russia with the European nations markedi in yellow being the bargaining chip (coincidentally, these are all former Warsaw-pact states), or the west keeping investments in the area low just in case of bigger war. On the other hand, it falls in line with how we’ve been treated for years, second class wanna-be westerners.

  6. Poland’s democratic backsliding under the PiS government led the EU to withhold funds over rule-of-law concerns. Consequently, the U.S. classifying Poland as a tier 2 country, facing AI chip export restrictions, is unsurprising.

  7. The countries in yellow trade extensively with others that often omit restrictions, including Poland. They’ve noticed a spike in trade with shell companies facilitating imports for Russia. Simple as that.

  8. Circumventing such restrictions is half the fun. In computing people put up barriers, and almost immediately, literally teams of people all over work on getting around those restrictions. Good luck.

  9. Tier below Germany and France (that both have history of going to bed with Russia just to make money) and with likes of Hungary or Ukraine. I hope Polish public will finally understand that politics is not about bending over for “allies”, but playing cards right to get best deal for ourselves.

  10. maybe we should restrict involvement of polish soldiers in us invasions

  11. You’re right, the Tier system largely follows Cold War patterns. However, the democratic backsliding in Poland and Hungary remains a notable factor.

  12. And that is why we hate being categorized as “Eastern Europe”. In practice it means for us humiliating restrictions and the status of a 2nd category ally (if an ally at all).
