NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – A local business is closing up shop at Norfolk’s Selden Market — and she’s taking her jewelry with a special message back on the road.

10 On Your Side’s Katie Collett first told you about Brittney Mayes and her jewelry store Polished Concrete in 2023. Mayes, who found out her grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease while she was in grad school, started her company to help offset the ongoing healthcare costs.

Mayes has always traveled, selling her jewelry and sharing the importance of Alzheimer’s awareness. She said she uses her background in engineering and construction management to make her business a success.

Mayes told WAVY 10 that her goal is to use her profits to help build affordable Alzheimer’s facilities for those living with the disease.

“Good design sparks conversation, and that’s something that’s my motto,” Mayes said. “So, I feel as though when people see those shiny things, they come in and it draws them in, and then when they’re in, now we’re able to talk about Alzheimer’s disease awareness and the mission that I’m trying to promote.”

Now that Mayes has closed up shop at Selden Market, she plans to once again travel the country to sell her jewelry and spread her message.
