Reading the article it sounds like him being a spy earlier in life had absolutely nothing to do with his work as an art historian for the queen.
I think this is just a case of trying to make a mountain out of a molehill because the queen was (extremely) tangentially linked to this man.
Also, if you read it, it’s not actually clear the queen wasn’t told at the time just that she was “officially” informed nine years later. This was likely to give her the ability to deny all knowledge not that she wasn’t actually told.
Interesting article. Well laid out. I’d heard of this guy before but the timeline, etc, was never clearly laid out.
So many people were recruited to spy for the Russians or the US.
Sadly, the fact that this guy wasn’t in jail shows how not impressive he was as a spy.
