This is a surprising and rather “short-notice” announcement. Regardless of her politics, we can all be thankful for a generally healthy political scene in Switzerland. Amherd has had a long and distinguished career in public service, working for Switzerland.
I hope we get someone that brings some integrity into that building (and thus people can write things down again without having to fear “leaks”).
The VBS has always been a good “parking lot” for incompetent SVP politicians, because there they couldn’t do much actual harm (except to waste the limited budget the departement had).
Now the VBS has been in “Mitte” hands for a couple of years, the SVP who previously “owned” the VBS for 25 years in a row (and thus of course has run it into the ground) started to complain about the condition of the departement. A few days ago they even demanded Mitte-Amherd’s resignation to avoid further “damage” to the departement. Quite funny.
My first impulse would be: give it back to them and free either the WBF or the UVEK from their SVP-Councillors. Unfortunately I fear that the SVP doesn’t actually want the VBS back, because they can do more damage to the country in the departements where their people are now.
Also unfortunately, the importance of the VBS is now bigger than it has been in many decades.
