ReadingRussia – Flew back to Russia. Picked up a newspaper. Read this: “The USSR may come back to life this year.” Then this: ““It cannot be ruled out that this year Ukraine will cease to exist.” Bluster? Belligerence? Makes you wonder where things are heading. Steve Rosenberg for BBC News

  1. look at hungarian newspapers it might be easier to translate start with this one: origo.hu

  2. Russian here.

Not to spoil Steve Rosenberg’s very (unironically) courageous work in Russia, but looking at an interview of Patrushev, who was demoted this summer from the secretary of the security council to an aide to Putin responsible for shipbuilding, in a newspaper that is pretty much the equivalent of the Sun in the UK is kind of stretching it.

“The USSR can come back to life this year” is a quote from a guy who was one of the best players of Russian Jeopardy ever, but then went into politics where he didn’t do anything useful with his completely crazy communist-Marxist worldview.

  3. If this is what is being floated in Russian newspapers, then these are truly desperate times for the Kremlin…

The real threat here is inflation, this might bite the hardest, history shows it can truly poison an economy, and Russia’s is already on the brink.

  4. >where things are heading

With the current shaky state of some frontlines – near Pokrovsk, etc. and the fact that Trump is highly likely to cut off the majority of weapon supplies, plus peace talks might not work – yeah… we might see the last of Ukraine

  5. Yea, everyone is suffering from Russophobia yet the only ones who have no clue why, are Russians.

    What.A.Fucking.Cancer. ffs.

  6. One thing to always remember is that the Russian leadership is never operating with anything remotely resembling the true facts of the situation, the entire system is built on placating your superiors and saving your ass with whatever you think they want to hear, theft and corruption. They systemically over-estimate the strength of their own position and under-estimate the problems facing them.

And the Russian public has it even worse.

  7. It sounds suspiciously similar to Trump’s “I cannot rule out the use of military or financial pressure to annex Panama’s canal, Canada and Greenland”.
Different Nations, different Countries, but dogs’ farts make the same sound.

  8. This sounds desperate. Their economy is tanked and fires all over. Ukraine needs to be able to hold on

  9. Think opposite.

Russian official statement = opposite of reality.

  10. > sensational Zhirinovsky’s prophecy: USSR is about to rise again in 2025

the guy in question died a couple of years ago. Meanwhile Steve Rosenberg: skips the first part of the headline and cites the rest unironically (not to mention carefully omitting the frontline)

I feel bad for sad and pathetic state of British state propaganda, and this sub, in turn

  11. Boys, we cant rule ou that in just three days kiev will fall and glorious famine will hit russia. Cheers suka
