Los Angeles wildfires spark insurance anxiety among victims • FRANCE 24 English

As hundreds of Los Angeles residents return to find homes reduced to ashes due to a devastating wave of wildfires, many are fearful that their insurance policies may not cover the rebuild cost and that future premiums will be astronomical. We talked about this situation with Michael Wara, Senior researcher for climate and energy at Stanford University.

  1. House owners who lost their properties in the wildfire and are not properly insured still have a recourse in law. They should launch a mass action civil suit against the state of California with the Governor and Mayor of LA joined as codefendants. The claim should be for negligence and wilful endangerment of lives and property.

The fire hydrants and the reservoirs were dry. In legal parlance, that is res ipsa loquitur, (facts which speak for themselves) and will be damning evidence against the defendants.

  2. One would have thought that since the last wildfire event. New builds had to be built with fireproof materials : brick, cement etc etc. no more timber framed asphalt roofs houses.

  3. The rich can pay. But what about others.? It’s a whole new population of homeless who can afford it while others who can’t will be forced out. The rebuild will exasperate wealth inequality

  4. Defund the Police, Defund Firefighters, Sanctuary State, and Criminal Justice Reform…. And you wonder why Insurance are leaving…

  5. That's why it is important to have an attorney to represent the homeowners behalf when a multi-million dollar disaster claim is filed against the insurance company. The insurance company will always try to lowball the policyholder or outright deny the claim. Insurance companies are out here to make money.

  6. It's just an old hype, living in California. It became a place where everything is measured only by money, nature is awful, ocean dirty and wild, you need a car even if you want to go to the toilet. No, thank you.

  7. The mortgage lenders mostly own these properties. They should pay to rebuild these homes and businesses. Or the owners should walk away. The people will be broke anyway.

  8. 0:06 some of the highest real estate costs as well an average property in the Pacific Palisade is around $4 million
not any more it isn't. this is a golden opportunity for the state/county/city to buy up the land at fire sale prices and build good public housing serviced by good public transportation. that way L.A. can end it's homeless crisis.

  9. There's no way I support a bailout. There were incredible numbers of fraudulent claims 2017-2018 and state regulators forced the companies to pay. I don't want my tax dollars going to tearing down reservoir and dams for tribal interests. They overharvested their fishery previously and demand massive subsidization of both tribal governments tribal fisheries which the federal observers were corrupt. Socialism is not working in California. Multiculturalism is not working. The political leadership is incompetent and out of touch.

  10. Don't mistaken Market Price for Rebuild cost, probably ~500-750k. It's more a question of how fast it can be done. The next big concern will be flooding as most of the ground vegetation is gone.

  11. Can someone explain why houses in California are built with wood? Earthquakes, cheaper material? But on the down side, they become match boxes, when wild fire strikes. California is good at regulating, why is the State not regulating fire safe building code? Check out the houses in Europe. They are all made with bricks in a not dry climate, so not much fire risk.

  12. Some absolutely shocking and unacceptable information here about insurance companies! They're happy when making billions. Same with health insurance companies!

  13. Conspiracy or coincidence, they coming for everything you have and own..See the disused under climate change….. they control the climate. FIRE, STORMS ,HURRICANE, war, DROUGHT, etc.. Americans lobbyists owned politicians have sold out America wholesale to big businesses…. still Conspiracy or coincidence?? You figure it out..

  14. THE ONLY tool the New Word ORDER have currently is climate change.. they win with climate change every one becomes a prisoners in an open air global prison.

  15. You aren't entitled to a multi-million dollar home built in a risky fire zone. If you take that risk, you should have to bear the costs, which is very high insurance or no insurance. That means property values will fall. Why should the government or home owners in the rest of the country have to pay to subsidize the value of their homes? Let the market price them at their real value.

  16. State Farm cancelled 1,600 policies in Pacific Palisades last year because Newsom and his minions refused to negotiate and instead passed legislation not allowing them to raise premiums to cover their exposure. All Newsom had to do was reduce their taxes. State Farm would have been able to maintain or even lower premiums and still cover loss. Stae Farm had little choice but to leave the California and not renew or cancel policies. Instead of fixing an immediate problem, Gov. Newsom worked on 'Trump Proofing' instead of 'Fire-Proofing' his state to the tune of between 25 and 100 million dollars while cutting the wildfire preparedness budget by millions over the last 4 years. This is what happens when you have elected officials who are negotiation incompetent, ultra left wing ideologic and who care more about themselves then the people and property they have sworn to protect.

  17. Perhaps the “average” home costing 4 million dollars, which insurance may not cover replacement for – should be reassessed by those able to purchase such a home? What if more modest, less expensive homes should be entertained? What if this tragedy gave question to excess beyond need? That excess will probably be addressed by charging less affluent people more for their insurance, while those w/ greater wealth will still be able to buy the properties that the average American homeowner cannot. This could be a chance to reassess the gross income disparities that exist in our country, and also to address climate change in a more serious manner.

  18. Before discussing whether to rebuild or not, there needs to be a discussion of what mitigation strategies such as controlled burns were not employed that could have reduced the risk of the fire spreading like it did.

  19. The goverment of LA,the politicians of LA, the shot callers,whatever..must really change much how housing is organized in this town after this. All dangerous vegetations close to house must be secured, water supplies must be available..fire lanes must be established.. the ant hill housing must stop…and many more things..this is of course, unacceptable as its been in LA..it was a situation just waiting to happen…

  20. The “New” California waterfront will be built like a “Miami-Style” Mega Smart city with multiple hi-rise beach front hotels, resorts and condos (from $5-50+million each) including shopping malls, restaurants and a smart rail. Malibu, Santa Monica and Palisades are too enclosed for the rich and famous Hollywood people ONLY.

Why get $40+million for one old beach house when you can get 10X times ($40+billion) that amount for a mega multi-story hi-rise condo building.

  21. Home owners should forget about insurance and invest in measures to prevent their house to burn down. Large water reservoir, automatic sprouts and a battery to power all of that. Firefighters will NOT save your property.

  22. It is so stupid to deny climate change with one hand and then demand full insurance cover on the other hand. Insurance companies are not charities

  23. 0.41 – house estiamted at 1.3 mil. no, its the house plus land is 1.3 mil.. insurance is only liable for the house which was 600k-700k.
