UK-wide ‘Armageddon alert’ to be sent to millions of Brits phones causing loud alarm

1. For any particular reason or just every half an hour or so to keep us on our toes?

2. I remember the last time they tested it. Despite all the warnings I still nearly had a heart attack.

   It’s really good they are taking this into consideration and that it can be turned off.

7. to be fair this is the UK so the alert will probably just be a loud tut followed by silent disapproval. That’s enough to “cause loud alarm”

8. If it’s such a simple job of sending a signal out that all phones will receive then why wait until later on in the year?

    There’s me visiting my coffee shop, pretty baked.
    It’s 1030 or something, and all the phones are going off.

    My brain thinks ze Germans are coming, let’s av some. Apparently they do it once a month!

11. Good idea in theory but I think I’ll start taking bets on how they’ll manage to fuck it up.

12. Last time they did this a workmate turned his phone off, wrapped it in tinfoil and chucked it in the garden for a few hours, he was very proud that the government couldn’t locate his phone while we were all now being spied on or something…

    Dumb idea but politicians can’t resist the power to directly interfere people’s lives. Fast forward ten years and we’ll be getting mandatory party political broadcasts via this system.

    I turned it off after the “red weather warning” that didn’t even cover me. One false alert renders these systems useless and the very first one I got was false so bye bye forever.

15. We had one recently due to flooding. It was for a tiny area that always floods (it’s on the flood plain), and is nowhere near us. It woke my wife and six week old baby up, who were getting the first proper bit of nighttime sleep since he was born. Seemed a little bit unnecessary in that instance.

17. When they used it during that relatively minor storm, I got it while driving… I almost crashed into the car in front of me :-/

    If there is a nuclear warhead incoming… Sure, do it! …but not for a relatively small storm that all the media had been blathering on for days…

    I turned it off…

28. Turned it off. Never had an alert to tell me it might be a bit windy. The whole system is a bit pathetic!
