  1. It’s cause we could supply them with visas for going outside the EU. But all jokes aside, it’s great seeing so many people take others in during these trying times.

  2. Dominic Rabb’s argument the other day was that allowing too many Ukrainian’s into the UK would erode the goodwill of the British people. That says a lot about the UK Govt’s opinion of the British people. Maybe if the Tories hadn’t driven the country into the ground with austerity and Brexit they’d not have these concerns.

Britain needs to take responsibility for its actions and open its border to Ukrainians. Their elites have benefited from Russian money, and they poked the Russian bear and left the Ukrainian people defenceless to suffer the consequences.

And it already looks like Boris is ready to start back peddling with Putin threatening to put his own squeeze on European economies via natural resources.

They really should be ashamed of themselves.

  3. That’s a tiny bit misleading. We will be taking in a LOT but the majority who are here so far appear to have arrived by themselves to stay with friends or family who live here permanently. Most so far haven’t been officially brought here by the Irish government. The government welcomes them though regardless of how they got here

  4. I was trying to help get someone in from Afghan who was in danger of being executed for being associated with the Afghan government a few month back during the taliban take-over. Got told to fuck off because the cap was 200 people, and those 200 places were already taken by people who had pending applications for years. A lot must have changed to have this new increased capacity for refugees, can’t be racism right?

  5. They couldn’t be arsed helping out their own contractors in Afghanistan now they can’t help out the refugees of the country whom they led down the garden path with the idea of mutual defence. This UK government has no sense of moral responsibility.

Disclaimer: NATO is not responsible for the war, Russia is. But NATO leaders knew they were flirting with the idea of Ukraine becoming a member without any serious intentions of following through and giving Russia a false justification for the war. They don’t bare responsibility for the war but they have a moral responsibility to help those affected.

  6. Country that left friend group to avoid ‘dem foreignerz’ doesn’t help ‘dem foreignerz’. Shocked.

  7. Mad respect to Ireland from the UK! Hope our government actually gets up and does something about this.

  8. The scheme has been running for a day or so, I expect by the end of the day that 50 will be in the hundreds and by Wednesday the thousands.

  9. There was a sky news guy interviewing the Polish ‘foreign minister’ and their difference in attitudes shocked me. The Sky fella kept calling it a refugee crisis or humanitarian crisis and there are just too many refugees to handle. The polish fella just kept repeating that they will give refuge to anyone who needs it and they will manage.

  10. Do we have a more reputable source of these figures? This British news channel tends to be geographically challenged and even confused Dublin as being part of the UK many years ago.

  11. Seriously?

    Let’s not.

Let’s not make this human tragedy an excuse for petty one-man-up-manship.

  12. The only thing that should matter is that the UK does more and that the British public are aware of their second rate actions compared to EU.

  13. UK was the first European country to give weapons to Ukraine before the Russian invasion. Other counties refused. UK also trained 20,000 Ukrainian soldiers. Everyone hating on Britain when it was the first European country to act against Russian aggression

  14. Have any/all of them arrived here yet or just that we’ve agreed to take 1,800? I hope it’s what they have arrived here and that they’re safe.

  15. Imagine Brexiting to protect Russian money laundering just to have the Ruble nosedive. You deserve this, UK.

  16. But it’s OK because Boris has a 6 step plan. That’s much better than housing people fleeing bombs right?
