  1. The current leader of the opposition and former women’s and equalities minister holds views which demonises transgender people and the former Prime Minister made a joke about them whilst Brianna Ghey’s mother was in the gallery.

No wonder people feel like doing things like this is acceptable.

  2. Not for a moment excusing the attackers.
They should do every day they’ve been sentenced to.

    Just wondering, though.
Are there rules for disclosing your sex vs. gender?
Seems like this would fall under the consent laws, and whether consent was given.

It’s of course impossible to know,
but I feel this attack could have been prevented if the victim had been upfront about their sex vs. gender status.

  3. “assault as revenge for performing a sex act on one of the teenagers who had not realised she was transgender.”

Yet another reason why disclosure is so important.

Violence against Transfolk is always unacceptable. But there are deeply unwell people out there who will resort to violence in these situations.

It is also incredibly fucking trashy to not be upfront about your identity.

  4. Normalise teaching informed consent in schools. If they don’t know what bits you’ve got it’s not informed consent.

  5. It was almost a Brianna Ghey situation again, wasn’t it? Awful.

  6. It’s disgusting seeing others blame the victim in this comment section.

  7. Weird how there are always hundreds of comments showing concern about transgender children making school sports less fair, and barely a dozen when it comes to radicalized schoolchildren stabbing each other because being trans has been turned into this big scary issue.

  8. those are some light sentences for the actual attack. its not like they just beat her, they used knives and actually stabbed her several times. only getting 3 years for that in a youth dertention is insane, sure one of them got 8 years but again in a youth rehabilitation center.

  9. And of coooooourse the usual “well but she didn’t disclose it so I’m gonna talk about that instead of the fact that she was stabbed” brigade are on here. The onus, in my view, should not be on the trans person to disclose, because they’re at risk of harm. The only risk that the cis person has for asking is their date dumping them if, when the topic comes up, they run their big mouth and turn out to be a transphobic asshole. Between the worst case scenarios of trans people maybe dying and transphobes being alone and miserable, I’d take transphobes being alone and miserable.

Imagine something here. Say that you’re a girl but you have a (harmless) rash all down your legs. This isn’t going to matter when oral sex is being performed, because you don’t do oral sex with your legs, and having been attacked for having a rash down your legs beforehand, you just decide to keep quiet. What would you think about this scenario?

  10. The far right is gaining traction all over. This is the result.

  11. So many things are shocking about this story. Firstly, how utterly stupid the defendants are. Neanderthal behaviour then published on Snapchat I mean honestly.

Another report said that after the victim had been outed they still tried engaging with the group and had been abused, yet still turned up to go to the event with them. I find that heartbreaking, I think a lot of people can empathise with being a teenager who craves a feeling of belonging, and I can only imagine this poor girl having that amplified 100 times being trans.

  12. I see we are blaming a teenage girl for being almost murdered. God; I hate this country.

  13. This is really fucking sad. I would like to make a point though after reading the article, if you’re transgender you have an obligation to inform people youre sexually intimate with. It doesnt warrent anything close to what this poor girl experienced but its vital that we make sex an open and honest experience imo

  14. Not only is this a disgusting crime, which, let’s be honest, was motivated by transphobia, but the reaction to it has also been vile. If your first reaction to seeing a woman get stabbed 9 times is “well, maybe if she’d revealed she was trans, this wouldn’t have happened”, then you seriously need to get help.

It’s because of people like these why trans people often *don’t* reveal their identity. In a world where you can get hospitalised just for being trans, why would you tell anyone you didn’t absolutely have to? Fucking hell, a little bit of empathy and critical thinking would go a long way.
