  1. Flippin eck. I swear only a couple days ago there were stories saying biggest drop since 1980s. Now we’re at 70s?

Choo choo! All aboard the regression’n’recession train!

[On second thought, maybe it was something about biggest energy costs since 80s or something like that. In any case, please have your tickets ready all the same]

  2. Fascinating that we have know this was going to happen this month anyway due to the last of Brexit trade barriers coming to force, and then fucking Russia steps in and saves the conservatives by invading the Ukraine.

    >You must fully comply with the onshored UK regime by **31 March 2022**

The end of this month is the point when we can no longer ignore the Brexit trade barriers.

The Ukraine situation doesn’t help things at all, but it a wonderful smokescreen for Boris by Boris.

  3. Thus is what the brexiteers wanted..back in time. Allegros for everyone. Time when men were men and worked in factory by mill, ‘nd mother were at stove makin’ dinner. Tis a grand time . Just wait till little Johnny gets home he’ll feel the back of my hand……nostalgia…

Edit.. for some of you there is some satire/piss taking in my post ..Viva L’Allegro !

  4. Tory Britain…don’t worry though they will still be able to buy their champers while we are all on bread and water

  5. Good news! At the rate things are going we’ll be back in the roaring 20s by the end of next year, problem solved.

  6. > Delivering the Mais business lecture last month, Mr Sunak said that it was “hard to cut taxes at a time when demands on the state are growing” and that sustainable tax cuts had historically been delivered by Conservative governments once “once the deficit was under control”.

Thus admitting the deficit is not _currently_ under control.

So who’s responsible for that, Rishi? Who pissed away billions on Tory donors promising non-existent PPE?

  7. Neoliberals leading us into a new age of slavery and serfdom. Why did I have to be born on this god forsaken island of fascists state level corruption where the state and stability disappears into rich man’s pockets.

  8. What annoys me is that they will blame it on covid and the russian invasion of Ukraine.

But the main reason is the past years of conservative rule which have hampered the economy and all the huge waste of public money.

  9. 70’s be better then what’s going to happen with inflation and the cost of living, a bloody nightmare awaits people especially the low paid and unemployed

  10. >The economic fallout from conflict in Ukraine will help trigger the biggest fall in living standards for Brits since the mid-1970s, according to the Resolution Foundation, a leading think tank.

So this is mostly about energy costs and inflation which will affect most of the world. Time to stop going on about Brexit 😴

  11. It can’t be far off. I’m really lucky to have a high-ish income home, and even with zero real concern about rising costs, I find myself going without things on principle.

My gas meter records 30 minute intervals, so I can see exactly when I’m using money. I find myself going, “wow, the heating was 30p for that 30 minutes, I’ll just put a coat on”. Or similarly, I no longer use the oven as much because it costs 48p per hour to run it at current prices – why would I pay that much money to a company to allow me to cook my food?

Ultimately, though, this is what the Brexiteers wanted. They got the Britain they were warned about.

  12. Ah, the 70’s. Such happy memories, power cuts, streets full of rubbish due to strikes.

    It’s gonna be amazeballs ٩( ^ᴗ^ )۶

  13. Well at least now my family will stop telling me they had it worse in the 1970s every time I complain about how hard it is to get by as a young professional in this current state of the UK.

  14. Why not get you some of that sweet sweet money from Russia your PM and friends are sucking up?

Just a thought, then you too can have parties in the backyard.

  15. So productivity continually rises, and living standards continually drop while inequality continues to rise.

Where is the money going? Ah fuck it’s so hard to figure it. There must be a solution, but what could it be?

  16. This is so cool, were going to become and actual cyberpunk dystopia!

I’d suggest we go down a sort of cybersteam route where Tories in top hats wearing VR monocles carry electrified canes to beat the starving orphans out the way.

I mean what a cool aesthetic, and were so close, come on guys, another decade of Tories and we can all be there!

  17. From what I remember the 1970’s weren’t all that bad. Yes there was high inflation at times but the cost of rent was affordable, public transport was cheap and food products that were price controlled by the government were cheap, things like milk

  18. I literally do not know how most people below 25k are going to be living in a few months, how isn’t there absolute outrage everywhere? So many people are on the breadline and in a few months time are just not gonna be able to afford to live and it feels like there’s just a general murmur of “yeah that’s bad”, how is it sustainable?!

  19. I’ve tallied it up, additional expenses for fuel, food and heating add up to about 150-160 pcm for my household of two.

    Its pretty brutal

  20. At least in the 70s you could get by on a single non-skilled, blue-collar wage. Buy a modest house even. And if your kids hit the books hard, they could not only get to university, but actualy be *paid* for doing so.

  21. Maybe it’s time for a bailout, since we rescued the banks during the financial crisis, it’s their turn to return the favour. Zero profits for any bank for the next 15 years, just let them keep a 1% revenue increase each year and tell them that they should be grateful. The money can be used to adress the defecit.

  22. Hang on but I was told that dogmatic adherence to capitalism at the expense of everyone else and the country would only improve living standards?
