The US needs to do this too.
The city of Paris is taking part. Hopefully other European capitals will do the same
I suspect over half of the apparent users are either bots or legacy (abandoned) accounts. I made sure to formally ‘delete’ mine when I finally left a few months ago the toxic soup Twitter has become.
Final straw was repeated reporting of hate accounts (i.e. really explicit comments) that **weeks later** I would be advised that the account was operating within terms and conditions….
What is X?
Vive la France
Edit: spelling
Ban that cesspool in EU… yesterday was too late.
Très bien! Remember kids, X stands for eXcrement!
>the algorithms “favour the proliferation of hateful content and conspiracy theories
is there any evidence for this?
Seems like people are fed up with how X is being run, especially with the way it’s handling hate and misinformation.
>**A group of French organisations are asking the public to leave X on January 20th, the day that incoming US President Donald Trump will be inaugurated.**
>The French Human Rights League (LDH) and the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) cofounded the collective “HelloQuitteX,” which is now supported by a group of 86 unions and organisations that pledge to no longer post any content on X because the algorithms “favour the proliferation of hateful content and conspiracy theories,” according to a press release on their website.
>The platform, the coalition says, has also been the scene of “cyberharassment campaigns” by the far right in countries like France and the United States.
>“By leaving X, we are well aware of depriving ourselves of a communication channel to promote our actions,” the coalition said in the French newspaper Le Monde.
>“But this tool … has become a serious danger”.
>The collective accuses X owner Elon Musk of “manipulating the conditions of public debate” away from human rights and equality, the statement continues.
>Their statement asks anyone who shares the LDH’s view of “advocating for digital spaces that respect … the protection of pluralism, respectful date and reason” to partake in this “fundamental mobilisation for democracy,” by boycotting X and joining them instead on Mastodon or Bluesky.
>**Users down across the EU**
>The movement follows one from 60 German and Austrian institutions last week, which said they would leave X or drastically reduce their app usage.
>That decision came a day after Musk hosted a conversation with Alice Weidel, the leader of the far-right political party Alternative for Germany (AfD).
>Roughly 105 million people had an X account in the EU between February and July 2024, but only about two-thirds of those accounts are logged in, according to the company’s most recent transparency report.
>That number is down from 111.4 million in the six months leading up to January 2024.
>A recent analysis by Euronews found that user numbers fell in 25 of 27 EU member states in 2024, with only Germany and Finland seeing an uptick in new accounts being created.A group of French organisations are asking the public to leave X on January 20th, the day that incoming US President Donald Trump will be inaugurated.

Even at its best of times I don’t understand why people liked twitter, seemed like a horrible platform always in terms of usability, now you are just submitting yourself to ridicule.
X is dead 💀
The hypocrisy of the last couple of weeks regarding the Twitter situation has been a sight to behold.
Where were those many voices clamouring for the end of Twitter back in the mid-2010s when it was widely used as a propaganda tool by ISIS, convinced thousands of western-born people to join an enemy state and hundreds more to commit terror attacks in Europe?
Oh yeah, fucking nowhere. It was just business as usual.
And now we’re supposed to clap like sea otters while listening to politics and journalists demanding to shut it all down because “Musk bad”?
And as always, this is exactly what’s going to bring more folks to X. People read these kinds of headlines and think that everyone’s jumping ship. No, this is free advertising lmao
Everyone needs to do this, and then FB, threads, and finally Prime memberships and the WP subscriptions. It will never happen though.
Instead of calling to leave X, why no co-opt X to a more European platform like Mastodon?
Europe will have to lead the way here.
Californian checking in, USA is totally drunk and we need the old world to hold our beer for a minute.
We are essentially 18 years old as a country and just discovered the alcohol that is corporate oligarchy fascism and we need a minute.
