CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa could become the only state in the country to fully remove the phrase climate change from its science standards.
Educators are confused because we don’t know who actually removed climate change and other topics from the state standards.
According to the Department of Education’s website, a revision committee updated the standards before releasing them to the public.
However, members of that committee say the standards released to the public are different than what they voted on.
TV9 asked the department of education why the final standards are different than what committee members reviewed and who made the changes, but the department refused to answer any questions.
One committee member also says the group didn’t have enough time to review the state’s science standards.
“To create a meaningful and well done standards revision document in the time we had is not feasible,” said Jeff Nordine, Science Standards Revision Team member.
Iowa is one of many states that uses the Next Generation Science Standards.
If the state’s proposed changes go into effect, Iowa would be the first state to fully remove climate change from its framework.
