
TIL Casablanca was banned in Ireland in 1943 for portraying Vichy France and Nazi Germany in a “sinister light,” which violated the Emergency Powers Order, which aimed to keep Ireland neutral in World War II. A version with cuts was released in 1945, and a more complete version was released in 1974.

I’ve got a book about censorship in Ireland, it’s as thick as War and Peace. That it took until the 70s to see the film properly is indicative of what crippling country this once was.
Brilliant film btw, every line of dialogue is a zinger. Not a single second is dead air.
There’s some pile of wankers in that comment section. Claiming we were actually in favour of the Nazis and not neutral.
