  1. Says the boss of a retail chain that has made it harder for people to find employment with them, in part because of the greater use of self-service tills.

  2. Gotta keep the shareholders happy with the profits after all. Self-service tills were first but I’m sure further cuts in staff costs mean customers will be required to self-stock the shelves soon.

  3. My first job was with next and tbh he is doing all young people a solid by taking that option away from them.

  4. Over a Billion in profits but they have to cut staff because of a 70 Million pound tax rise? They really think they are owed everything at the expense of nothing.

  5. Need to boycott all self service tills unless under 5 items , they suck , you usually end up having to wait for an assistant anyway so not quicker

  6. But..but Rach from.complaints is ‘fixing the foundations’ and so what if that means destroying businesses through tax.

For example, the traditional bumper Xmas period this year saw a drop of 0.3 % sales. Rach was comparing herself to Thatcher yesterday so it makes sense she may be referred to as…..

    The Iron Headed Lady.

  7. It’s not just Next who are saying this, the tax NI changes and employment law changes will continue to push unemployment up.

  8. He’s a hypocrite then as he only offers people their “Next job.”

  9. When I was a teenager, there was kind of a hierarchy for your weekend job on the High Street.

The good looking ones got jobs at the thousands of fashion stores or perfume counters. The cool kids got jobs at music stores and cinemas. The normal kids worked at restaurants or other retail. Social rejects like me got jobs at McDonalds or KFC.

Unfortunately most of these places are closed so the good looking ones have been forced out of their ancestral habitats. I’ve noticed them foraging for work in normal places.

If this is allowed to continue, the good looking ones growing up today will only know that they’re better than us if they become influencers or do social media and online dating. That isn’t enough.

We need more jobs at Lush, Pandora or the Apple Store and more creepy hiring managers in their 30s and 40s. This can restore the balance we had when I was younger which is obviously better than now because it’s what I was used to.

  10. He is great at pretending to care here. All he is really saying is that he and other major retailers have found a way to save on staffing and to reduce the number of full-time employees even further. They have found a great opportunity from this crisis.

  11. Minimum wage for teenagers is fucking pitiful anyway. Claiming they can’t afford it is just not true.
