Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN Evangelos Sekeris criticized Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure during the UN Security Council session on Ukraine on Thursday.

Sekeris highlighted the impact of recent assaults, including the bombing in Zaporizhzhia, which resulted in significant civilian casualties.

“Russia launched new large-scale aerial bombing attacks against Ukrainian cities and territories, which continued well into the New Year,” Sekeris said, adding, “aerial attack against Zaporizhzhia caused the highest number of civilian casualties in almost two years.”

“Greece condemns in the strongest possible terms attacks against civilians and joins calls to immediately cease all attacks against residential areas and critical infrastructure in Ukraine,” he said.

Sekeris also addressed the presence of North Korean troops in Ukraine, describing it as a significant threat to global security.

“The presence of DPRK troops in the theater of war endangers international peace and security on an expanded regional scale with potentially far-reaching consequences for global nuclear security,” he said.

The Greek diplomat reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to international law and Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

“Greece’s foreign policy has always been defined by our commitment and adherence to international law, and the belief that all disputes can be resolved through dialogue has been embedded in our culture. We reaffirm our commitment to the sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders,” he said.
