6. A somewhat similar thing happened in Oregon a few years back, but in reverse. Democrats had control, Republican legislators were in the minority and so they couldn’t block anything the Dems wanted to do because they didn’t have the votes, so the Republicans peaced out and refused to show up in order to deny them a quorum. That was the only way they had to block the Democrats (and, more importantly, subvert the will of the people, which was their real goal). Many people on the left were telling the Democratic legislators to just do their jobs anyway, even without the quorum. The Dems said, “No, no. We can’t do that. We must follow the rules. We must respect the establishment.” And as soon as the tables are turned, Republicans ignore the rules, ignore the law, and just do whatever the hell they want with impunity.

   It’s not a democracy when there are only two parties and only one of them has any sort of commitment to democracy. Since Republicans will never again respect the rule of law, or the will of the people, or the institutions, or the constitution, or the rights of the people, and they have zero commitment to democracy, where they have power (still), Democrats really need to just ignore Republicans, pretend like they’re not there, and serve the will of the people. Get things done. Freeze Republicans out when they’re a minority. Move ahead with whatever you were planning to do when they try to peace out to deny Dems a quorum. Don’t listen to them, don’t try to work with them. Just get things done. Why should they do this? Because that’s what Republicans do whenever they’re in power. Every. Single. Time.

   Republicans are like the kid who keeps cheating at the game you’re trying to play with them, and Democrats are like the kid who keeps following the rules and keeps explaining the rules to the kid who’s cheating. It’s not that she doesn’t understand the rules, it’s that she doesn’t care. You’re not going to get her to stop cheating by explaining the rules again, and you’re not going to win against the cheater by following the rules. The best thing to do is to just stop playing.

7. It is quite apparent that this sub doesn’t understand that the article is about minnesota dems and that this vote by the Republicans means nothing.

8. They no longer believe in democracy as a party, unless they win.

9. America has become a fascist state. Any citizen who doesn’t stand up against this fascist regime is complicit. Now is the time to act. America has been duped by oligarchs.

10. People need to WAKE UP. This is happening with the North Carolina Supreme Court race, too. Republicans are engaging in a slow burn, hostile takeover of whatever appendages of government they can reach. This is about domination, not democracy.

    Sounds to me like they only pretended to elect a Speaker. Who is honoring that election that makes it so?

    DFL should continue on as if no speaker was elected because none was.

12. The current Republican theory of “democracy” is: you can’t win if you’re a Democrat.

    It’s not gonna end well for anyone.
