Artificial intelligence, a tool or a threat for Japan’s manga industry? • FRANCE 24 English
Japan’s celebrated manga industry is facing a dilemma: how to use artificial intelligence? Some comic book artists believe the technology will make their labour-intensive job much easier, but others have launched plagiarism lawsuits, claiming their work has been illegally copied by AI. As the country’s culture agency tries to identify pirated manga content on the internet – ironically, using AI – the country’s manga artists are wondering whether AI is a tool or a threat for their art. I lose interest entirely if I find out something was made using AI. Even if it looks alright, I still can't take it seriously. It looks really bad most of the time and cheapens something that could've been beautiful. Art should be made by humans.
I think AI could be a helpful tool, as long as it doesn’t take all creativity and passion away
I remember when it was taboo just to use 3D assets for manga backgrounds just a few years ago, now they’re saying it’s fine to generate the entire shots with AI – it’s sad to see the state of an entire industry threatened like this
A.I. slop
AI will keep getting better and better. Nothing will stop it.
I've already have a list of series I want to remake or complete using AI, so at this point I don't even care about what is coming out of the studios themselves (most of new series have been garbage for years already).
I dont want to pay for things not made by individuals with dreams.
It's bad enough that soulless corporate monopolies control creative endeavors in movies and television. :/
If they find a way for generative AI to operate without training on thousands/millions of artists lifetime body of work without consent or compensation, I will say GG, and that it finally earned the neutral and innocuous title of "tool" that people are already ascribing to it.
But as long the tech is dependent on training on artists work without consent to be profitable, gen AI to me will continue play the part of the antagonist towards the art community.
Instead of finding actual solutions to the hell grind which is being a manga artist AI is being pushed as a band-aid solution. Publishers could offer holiday, rotate series to better artist health and other benefits.
What a digusting future for manga and art in general where stories and art are generated in whole or in part by an idea thrown at a machine for it to spit out. What's the point if it's not human made?
And a threat to ecology too. Let’s not forget about the resources its use cost.
It’s almost like an entire country of George Lucas‘s & James Cameron’s who made their best work with limitations but now could very likely make with new tech very mediocre work
Wow! Definitely an asset, bringing stories to life a lot quicker. Helps artist express their ideas faster than before
My nine year old daughter is using AI at school to create Manga inpired stories. She is blissfully unaware of how to create a nuanced story and develop art that will enhance the story. When viiewed on a phone they look deceptively good. As she gets older there will be little incentive for het to refine her stories and artwork, as protecion for intellectual property is virtually non-existent due to billion dollar companies controlling the political sphere that controls law making.
I know manga lovers will crucify me…. But part of the problem with manga is that with few exceptions all manga art published looks pretty much the same sh—-t. Pale people, straight jet black hair people, the stereotype over sexualized looong legs skinny girls with micro mini skirts. Everybody with the same huge abnormal eyes. The same emojis reactions of all characters. Maybe for manga lovers they can tell one author style from the other, but for the general public every manga book in the stands looks the same to any other. Sales are high, but the format is stagnant , they are easy mark for AI.
I'd be okay with this, but the thing that infuriates me the most is that AI takes away the credibility of real art people made. You could go the extra mile to make your work genuine, but people can look over it as AI.
I wouldn't have a problem with this as long as people knew my work was genuine.
Media and People are always known to be pessimists.
The major issue I see with AI, aside from ethics, is the sheer laziness of those who use it. No editing or touching up, just throw up whatever the machine gives them
Looks great.
AI is no benefit for Artists. Only Tech Bros and Bean counters love AI.
… something eatting their grapesbefore they harvest… i just feel that artist will lose critical thinking if a lot of their work is done for them. Are they stopping to think they may be consequentially training their replacement?
AI will bored human so we can meditate
This make NO sense
Suggesting AI is a tool for artists is like saying that "I heard you like having sex, how about you pay me and I will have sex instead of you?".
I think ai art is good but some way traditional art look more good than ai
Ugh…this is just depressing. What studio is this so I can ignore it?
AI tools should empower the artist, not take their jobs!!
They lose $8 billion to piracy, but how much did they earn? 25 years ago, no company cared about manga; it gained popularity because of piracy
Yikes…
Let’s agree on which parts of production truly matter and should remain human, and create a quality standard. Products that follow those guidelines will be preferred as premium content.
I don't mind backgrounds and sketches to be drawn by AI and unburden the creatives. The anime and manga industry are notoriously brutal, so in this case I think it will help a lot.
Nothing can beat
The era of Saturation begins
It’s only good because it’s based off of existing art made by artists who already spent hours creating the original pieces. I have no desire to buy manga that steals from other artists ✋
A threat.
There are no limited human resources, there are the non interest in hire new employees.
AI is already replacing human creativity. The problem with AI is not that's is good quality or not, it's the simple fact that it has too many positive marketing around it and the public just accept it, so it became something uncontrollable and then too many people are losing their jobs or being unpaid because of that.
4:52 Was waiting him to adjust his glasses before start talking
For long term, its threat, not because its not good, but AI art is too generic for casual audience. They may be not able to tell immidiately. But the lack of enthusiasm will reflect in decline sales.
DragonBall/ slamdunk/studio glibi etc, was massive not for being perfect rendition. Its just humanized fun to read
It looks so Lifeless.
AI, as useful as it may be, is super unregulated and will exacerbate our climate disaster.
This just golly woah
