ROCKPORT, Ind. (WFIE) – Steps are moving forward for American Electric Power as they look into building a power plant in Spencer County.
A company spokesperson tells us they are seeking grants from the government to support the early site permit process for a potential Small Modular Reactor to be developed in Rockport.
This would be made possible through AEP’s Indiana Michigan Power operating company.
Officials say Indiana Michigan Power is seeking $50 million to begin the early stages of developing a nuclear power plant at the site.
According to the company, Small Modular Reactors offer “tremendous potential to provide safe, reliable and clean energy 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
