Why have we come to assume that the best way to deal with displaced people’s is to just have them start a new life in a foreign country?
Let’s say Ukraine manages to win this fight, they’ll have to deal with the war dead along with a drop in population of 1.5million and rising.
The best thing we can do is have adequate accomodation and services for them as near to their home country as possible, so they can return to restart their lives and help rebuild when hostilities cease.

Here in Canada, we have offered to take in an UNLIMITED number of Ukrainians. As long as they pass the security check, they get a 2 year work visa (for now, that can be extended).
Canada has the largest Ukrainian expat population outside of Russia. Most of Western Canada was settled by Poles and Ukrainians just after WW1.
I remember during the brexit referendum people claiming they didn’t like ‘economic migrants’ but were fine with ‘real refugees’ coming into the country. Now we have indisputably real refugees all the bigots are having to come up with new ‘legitimate concerns’.

I believe that Ireland is making a smart decision by agreeing to take in 80,000 Ukrainians. Ireland is in a better position than the UK to handle this influx of refugees, and the Irish people are welcoming and compassionate.
The UK, on the other hand, is under fire for its failing response to the refugee crisis. The UK has been accused of not doing enough to help Syrian refugees, and there have been protests against the government’s policies.
I think it’s unfortunate that the UK is not doing more to help Syrian refugees, but I believe that Ireland is making the right decision by accepting these Ukrainian refugees.
