Polish PM says he wants ‘Breturn’ not Brexit as Starmer visits Warsaw

1. Goes to show that anti-UK sentiment in the EU might not be as strong as some people (bad actors?) like to make out it is. Even the man who was President of the European Commission and the European Council during Brexit would welcome the return of the UK.

2. Of course Poland want us back, we were the ultimate cash cow, and a good place for his countrymen to find work.

3. I hope someone took Starmer’s cheque book away first.

4. It’s not going to happen. As soon as it’s announced having to adopt schengen, euro and the loss of cap and any other opt outs support to rejoin will plummet.

6. NGL, I had to chuckle to myself when I watched this on the news because it just came across like you know when 2 kids want to have a sleepover and one says to the other “You ask my Mum if you can stay because she will say yes to you, she will just say no if I ask.” 😂☠️😂☠️😂

8. Too many dark forces will be at play if we ever had a second referendum on this. I even think the Americans would like to prevent this now, sadly.

9. How realistic it is, I don’t know, but my hope is we can offer them something symbolically that helps their interest in keeping the EU united.

   Re-joining would show that if you leave, it will ruin you economically & you will be left having to rely on the hope one day the EU put a hand back out.

   I hope the EU would see that as a benefit of letting us re-join

   To let history really drive home the lesson of ‘Don’t be like the UK’

   Would this help them in any way with other countries who sometimes threaten to leave? Would it help paint counter-EU movements as what they are, scams?

   I hope so, otherwise it’s sad to think we have did damage to our economy & personal freedoms no changes to UK law or policy can ever fix

10. When, not if, the UK wants to rejoin the EU , Europe will welcome it with open arms.

    If we could be in the EU, but not join the Euro and not be part of Schengen?

12. We won’t be allowed to rejoin under the terms we once had though. That will sink any ‘Breturn’ vote dead in the water straight away.

14. The EU countries never wanted us to leave because we were a net contributor. Our leaving will have cost the EU tens of billions over time, a gap which they will have to fill or make cuts.

    We had a good deal before we left which we are very unlikely to get back if we asked to rejoin but that shouldn’t stop us trying. We are unlikely to blatantly ask, more likely it will be by stealth with a major step being rejoining the customs union. If we get that back the rest can follow.

18. Since Brexit, there’s too many things that have happened in this world that lends to us to seriously rethink this. Russia aren’t going to stop nor are the CCP, Christ knows what Trump is going to do but it won’t be good for Europe.

    I’m not ashamed to say I voted for Brexit, not out of resentment for the EU but because I thought we’d be fine outside of it and we didn’t need to be part of a “club”. Well times have changed, local economy aside, there’s worse potential dangers on the horizon.

20. Every body seems to be missing the point and getting way ahead of themselves here about rejoining the EU.

    These guys met to forge a new security treaty, with Russian aggression and the Ukraine war potentially spilling into Europe, the key topic.

    Tusk said for obvious reasons they discussed Britain’s co-operation with the EU. Of course he’s going to say he misses the UK, there’s a war going on not too far away and a serious threat of escalation. That’s the entire point of the meeting and want he wants assurances for.

    He actually says a “Breturn” is just a dream, and he is perhaps labouring under an illusion, but he would rather be “optimistic”. Which gives you an idea of its seriousness.

    Make no mistake, this meeting is about the military presence and European alliance in the threat of war, not some meeting about potentially rejoining the EU…

21. I say it like this. We should stop breathing out useless air full of “oh I wish we could go back to the eu” and actually do something to encourage the government to rejoin and stop faffing around with “improving the relationship”. If enough people actually show they care instead of just saying it on reddit then it might just work.
