On June 1, 2024, the requirement for municipal executive directors and their deputies to have VDD’s permit to access state secrets entered into force.
The State Security Service said that it had assessed all the applications submitted by local government executive directors and their deputies to obtain a special permit for access to state secrets.
As a result of the evaluation, the Service adopted one decision on the refusal of a special permit due to identified risks to the security of protected information.
The Rēzekne Interim Administration on Friday dismissed the Executive Director, Raimonds Olehno. This may have been due to the refusal of the State Security Service to grant him access to state secrets, LTV reports.
LTV has not yet been able to contact Olehno himself.
The VDD also issued special permits to eight local government leaders for a shortened period – one, two, or three years instead of the maximum five years, the service said.
The special permits were issued for a shorter period due to identified risk factors, which are not yet sufficient grounds for refusing a permit under the Law On Official Secret. The VDD will continue to pay close attention to the activities of these persons.
