AUSTIN, Texas (KAUZ) – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission revealed today that it terminated employees and will be sending out notices to those affected after a data breach involving at least 61,000 recipients of service.
The agency said that agency employees may have improperly accessed the data, and that those employees have been terminated. The incident has been referred to the Texas Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General.
HHSC advised that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program users in particular should check their accounts for fraudulent activity.
According to a release from the agency, HHSC is offering services and support to those affected.
HHSC is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to those affected by the breach. Individuals affected by the breach will be notified via first-class mail no later than Jan. 20, 2025. They can also call 866-362-1773, toll-free, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST (excluding major U.S. holidays). When calling, use the engagement number B138648.
