Italy’s Sofia Goggia has claimed her first win in over a month in the downhill on home soil in Cortina d’Ampezzo on Saturday, while compatriot Federica Brignone took the overall World Cup lead.
Goggia’s last victory had been at Beaver Creek’s super-G on December 15, 2024 but she returned to the highest place on the podium with the fastest time of 1 minute 33.95 seconds.
Norway’s Kajsa Vickhoff Lie was second, 0.42s behind Goggia, while Brignone was the second Italian on the podium in third place.
The result was enough for Brignone to take the overall and downhill leads in the rankings. She chases a first overall title since her maiden one in 2020.
Record alpine skiing winner Mikaela Shiffrin is still not fit to race after a serious puncture wound in November.
A men’s downhill in Wengen, Switzerland is scheduled for later on Saturday.
