OKLAHOMA CITY- (KOKH) — With a cold snap expected to blast Oklahoma over the next few days, OG&E says they want customers to be prepared , whether you’re stuck without power or if you just want your home to be a little more cozy.

“Really, preparation is key when it comes to cold weather events like this,” said Carson Cunningham, a spokesman for OG&E.

Cunningham said a few ways to make your home warmer involve prepping your windows.

“Certainly opening the drapes to your home lets a lot of that natural sunlight come in, that’s a great way to get some natural heat without having to, if you have power, crank up and use a lot of energy,” he said.

He also said to put towels down near the bottom of the windows if you notice there’s a bit of a draft.

“The window areas are really areas we see where a lot of the heat from homes can be leaking out so cover those up, especially at night, close those drapes that I suggest you open during the day,” he said.

Cunningham also added to make sure your filters on your furnaces are cleaned and or replaced to make sure they’re working properly, and use space heaters, but be careful while doing so.

“Also use space heaters, we do encourage customers though to be safe with those, use them on a hard surface, not a combustible surface that could be a fire hazard,” he said.

Finally, Cunningham said to have an emergency kit ready in case you’re in a tough spot, packed with snacks, water, or prescriptions that you’re taking.

“We want you to stock your emergency kits and we want you to have them in your car and at your home, that way if you’re out and about you’ll have it on you as well. But it’s very simple things like prescriptions or over the counter medicines you may be taking. You know, portable device charges is a big one,” he said.

Cunningham added if you’re caught out in the cold, check their website for a list of warming stations you can go to if you don’t have anywhere to go to heat up.
