Weather experts have flagged a significant risk of severe storms, heavy rain, and potentially snowfall in Ireland.

Forecasts are pointing to adverse weather from midweek onwards; here’s what to expect.

Friday storm threat in Ireland

Forecaster Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather warned on X that models are increasingly agreeing on the likelihood of a storm striking Ireland on Friday, January 24. He noted:
“The ensembles in the last picture for gusts in Dingle show a lot of possible outcomes. This will still chop and change a lot.”

Similarly, weather hobbyist Kenneth Conlon from Donegal Weather Channel suggested that the incoming storm could bring snowfall in certain areas:
“Any snowfall will depend on the track of the low, with a more southerly track favouring snow and a northern track bringing only strong winds and rain.”

Weather maps published by WXCharts.com predict wind gusts exceeding 118km/h in parts of western Ireland, highlighting the potential severity of the storm.

According to Met Éireann, Ireland will experience sub-zero temperatures early in the week, with lows dipping to -2°C. The national forecaster described the week as “very unsettled,” with strong winds and heavy rainfall expected from Friday into the weekend.

Rebecca Cantwell from Met Éireann commented:
“Tuesday will continue mostly cloudy with patchy light rain or drizzle. By Thursday, outbreaks of rain will spread, with a mix of cold and wet conditions likely to persist into the weekend.”

Current weather conditions in Ireland

In the lead-up to the storm, Ireland will see relatively mild weather, with daytime highs of 7–11°C and patchy rain. Tonight, mist and fog are expected in some areas, with temperatures dropping as low as 2°C, particularly in the west and north.
Met Éireann predicts:
“Tomorrow will bring hazy sunshine in some parts after mist clears, but the overall outlook remains cloudy with scattered showers.”

Preparation tips for stormy weather in Ireland

As strong winds and heavy rain approach, it’s essential to prepare:

Secure outdoor items: High winds can easily dislodge outdoor furniture and décor.
Check before you travel: Flights and ferry services may be disrupted.
Stock up: Ensure you have essential supplies, especially if power outages occur.
Monitor weather alerts: Keep an eye on updates from Met Éireann and local news outlets.

Adverse weather conditions may extend to the UK, where yellow cold-weather alerts are already in place.
