SANDY SPRINGS, Okla. (KOKI) – Lost pets sometimes end up very far from home, but a stray cat in Oklahoma may have most of them beat.
The cat’s original home is apparently across the Atlantic Ocean. How it got to the American Heartland is anybody’s guess.
Sandy Springs Animal Welfare is not a stranger to cats, but this one gray guest is leaving everyone scratching their heads.
“He was in really good condition, so we weren’t sure what was going on, but we scanned him and he had a microchip, so we looked up the microchip company and called them, and they said it’s registered in the U.K.,” Animal Welfare Coordinator Tracy Anderson said.
The cat, known to the shelter as Samson, somehow made it all the way to the U.S. from the United Kingdom.
Anderson said they contacted a dog warden over 4,000 miles away in the U.K. and found a woman with a matching chip.
However, this led to an even bigger mystery, as her cat was sitting right next to her.
“Yeah, her cat was right there with her, so something happened when they microchipped the cats, they probably got switched, and we haven’t been able to track down the other numbers,” Anderson said.
Samson has done his stray hold and is now up for adoption.
He might be a descendant of British royalty for all anyone knows, but Anderson said he’ll find a family who will treat him like a king either way.
“Well, he would’ve had to have been shipped over and it’s really expensive to have them shipped over and then they have to be quarantined and all kinds of stuff,” Anderson said. “So, somebody loved this cat and put the money into getting him over here but it’s just hard to tell what happened to them, maybe they passed away or something, and it’s just really hard to tell. But he’s with us, and he’ll get a good home either way.”
Anderson said anyone with a cat or dog should make sure to have their microchips registered.
“Let you know the importance of microchipping and registering your microchips too, because a lot of times we get microchipped animals and we can’t find anybody on the registry,” Anderson said.
The foreign feline is one of many animals the facility has up for adoption.
