Just finished off a rather nice Black Bomber, which isn’t especially strong but beautifully creamy. (Rather fancy the Welsh Rarebit cheese bake on that site, too.)

What’s your favourite mature cheddar, from the eye wateringly strong to the obscenely creamy?

From the ‘cheap and not so nasty’ to the ‘fuck me that’s a rare treat’.

  1. I’m a big fan of red fox. Can’t help biting chunks off every time I visit the fridge (at home obv). Standard go to cheese in our house is the Lake District extra mature though. A solid all rounder. Both go well with a bit of branston onion chutney.

  2. Rockstar by The Snowdonia cheese company, deliciosly creamy with a lovely flavour.

  3. marks and spencer’s cheddar cheese. comes in a white/see through-ish packet with a red stripe down the middle. it’s made at the taw valley creamery and is yet to let me down.

  4. If we’re feeling super fucking fancy, Hafod or an Isle of Mull cheddar (care of Neal’s Yard Dairy)

For day-to-day just an extra mature from whichever supermarket I’m in.

  5. Black bob by Cheshire cheese co.

Tried a few including black bomber but bob is that bit better than them all.

  6. Godminster cheddar (the one in the red wax) strong and tangy but lovely and creamy too.

  7. Black Bomber is up there, but I also love Davidstow Cheddar, Extra Mature is my favourite, though other strengths are available, including Vintage.

I also like the Waitrose Crystally Extra Mature Cheddar, very nice and the texture4 is wonderful.

  8. Lincolnshire Poacher (if it’s a chedder, same sort of thing)

    Or

    montgomery cheddar

  9. Black bomber with some spicy chorizo and crackers is one of my favorite treats to myself! Lush cheese.

Might grab myself some tomorrow, thanks OP.

  10. I like a good crunchy extra mature – I think Sainsbury’s and M&S used to do a good ‘Cornish Cruncher’.

  11. I just dream of proper cheddar, now that I’m living abroad. All I get in my local supermarket is prepackaged orange squares 🙁

  12. Quickes cheddar gets my vote, with Isle of Mull and Wookey hole in joint second place.

  13. I can’t believe Black Bomber is being considered “not strong” lol. I’d say it’s strong, and probably the best.

  14. I’ve had a lot of Barber’s cheddar over the Christmas period. The Snowdonia cheeses have been very enjoyable too.

  15. Not usually fond of ‘extra mature’ cheeses, I was definitely suprisied when I had a Black Bomber over Christmas. I think it’s the texture that made it so good.

  16. Taw Valley is nice. I’ve only seen it at Iceland but it’s lovely.

  17. The Mousehouse Black Cheddar, coloured black with charcoal, was joint 1st in my friends and I’s annual cheese night over Christmas. It’s very strong, with an almost farm like taste if that makes sense. You known like a strong goats cheese smells like goats. Lol. It’s a showstopper for sure.

  18. Lye Cross. They make some of Lidl and Waitrose’s cheddars.

  19. I’m a cheddar snob and don’t believe it’s true cheddar unless it’s made in Somerset. That said, the best everyday cheddar I’ve found is Lidl Vintage – if you like strong, “crunchy” cheddar. And it’s made in Somerset!

  20. Barbers Coastal Extra Mature is a lovely cheese. Has a crunch from salt crystals too.

Had the privilege to be able to tour their facility a few years back. You try the cheese at every stage, have a tasting of their cheeses, tour the farm where their cows are and where they get milked, have a pub lunch, and are given a goodie bag at the end for the tour with loads of cheese and farmhouse butter in it.

  21. Godminster is the GOAT. Red wax. Seriously, it doesn’t get better.

  22. I love Snowdonia’s Ruby Mist and Amber Mist as a Festive snack.

    Barbers otherwise

  23. A rare treat: M&S truffle cheddar. Had some for Xmas and it was lovely.

(The truffle Brie was disappointing though)

  24. Davidstow Cheddar Special Reserve 60-month aged. It’s simply epic.

  25. Waitrose No1 vintage reserve Cornish quartz cheddar is my favourite so far
