Inta Soma, Head of the Nature Centre of the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve of the Nature Conservation Agency, explained: “With the colder weather, bats are hibernating in some cellars and attics. People use all sorts of names for bats – winged mice, little birds, insects, little animals, adorable snouts, rats, winged longears, friends, guests, tenants, hellions, cellar-keepers, etc. Curious, people approach them and often wake them up. But how to find out more about them without harming them? And should you report a hibernating bat in your basement?”

The answers to these questions will be provided by the “expeditions” to which everyone is invited.

Latvia is home to 16 species of bats. They are all harmless to humans, feed on insects, and are mostly nocturnal. During the night, bats ingest nutrients that make up a third of their weight – up to 600 mosquitoes between sunset and sunrise. All bat species in Latvia are specially protected.
