  1. So they just threw the thread from before into ChatGPT and asked it to write them an article, I guess?

  2. The only solution to the Lime Bike problem is to take space from cars

  3. “Calls”

Do we have the votes for this to be debated in Parliament?

  4. Typical street makeup:

    Total width: 6m

Space taken by car infrastructure: 5m

Space left for everybody else: 1m

How is lime bikes taking up 1m of street space a bigger issue than the cars that take up 5m?

  5. Could be solved by making all bike hires have docking stations like the Boris bikes. I hate the fact they’re littered everywhere

  6. People will complain about ebikes then drive their range rover half a mile to co-op and park up on the pavement to buy a loaf of bread.

  7. Cars take up way more space and they block most of the road when parked

We should be moving towards less car use, more pedestrianisation and more cycling – we can’t let the miserable sedentary boomers who want to drive everywhere keep us in the dark ages of congested car based cities

  8. People will complain about everything. Unfortunately, human beings are trash and nothing will ever be great. Those e-bikes are amazing for running around as opposed to using the tubes, cars etc. Even scooters were great! until they were being complained out of the city. You wonder why we stick to cars.

  9. I just need people to have a crumb of self awareness and not leave them completely across pavements or blocking dropped curbs.

  10. Create spots to park them from existing car park areas. They serve way more people per square foot.

  11. It’s quite simple, take a few parking spaces on each street away from drivers and dedicate them to shared bikes like these and fine the operators for any bad parking.

  12. the Lime bikes aren’t the problem, it’s the a/holes who use them. Dumping them without putting any consideration to others. I remember adverts in Ireland in the 1970s on how to park a bicycle with consideration to other people. This needs to be done again.

The other thing is how easy they are to steal. All the school kids in my area cycle around on them with the alarm going off and no one can be bothered to intervene in any way. When the battery dies, they just dump them and get another one.

  13. Cycle hire docking stations should be for all bikes. Let them compete against each other that way, paying rent to TfL to use the docking station.

If you want to run a competitive bus or train, you still have to go to the bus stop or rail station to board. This should be no different

  14. A Reddit post about a news article that is about a Reddit post.

Can’t wait for the follow-up breaking news about the Reddit post about the news article that was about a Reddit post.

  15. Why are half the comments here strawmanning about cars. I use lime bikes often they’re great but let’s not act like they don’t clutter the roads.

  16. If only the same would be done for cars.

I’d wager cars are left on public land longer than any bicycle, especially as they are single user and often single occupant.

DOcks for bikes and park & ride for cars would make public ways better

  17. Whenever this discourse comes up there is always an avalanche of comments moaning about cars.

Two things can be true, cars cause issues but so do the bikes.

The main issue is not the bikes themselves it’s with the lazy people that choose to park their bikes in really inconvenient spots.
For example in Hackney I’ve seen them blocking the entrances to flats, blocking spots reserved for disabled parking, I’ve seen them blocking pavements or chucked on the ground. In Notting Hill yesterday there was a bike blocking the entrance to the tube station that had been knocked over with a slew of confused tourists trying to scurry around causing some annoyance. I believe that there should be dedicated spots as well as a hefty fine for those blocking pavements and entrances.

Yeah cars are shit, but so are the lime bikes when they are disrupting the flow of the city and effecting people with disabilities.

  18. I constantly have to go into the road with my child and pushchair because of Lime bikes being left across the full width of the pavement. I imagine it’s far more difficult if you’re in a wheelchair, because at least I can navigate the curbs with some ease.

  19. The Mayor should extend the Santander Cycles (Boris Bikes) to Greater London and put Lime out of business.

  20. Sth must be done, they are polluting the pavements.

  21. It’s not a lime bike problem it’s a people being assholes problem.

  22. Please don’t ban them they are actually great just fucking sort it out so they have to be parked in the road. I’ve got every right to use the same space that cars do so let’s do that, it gets them off pavements and then they are accessible to everybody still without having to walk for miles to a collection point.

  23. I lived in the Netherlands and while bikes are great, and way less of a resource cost than cars, there’s still a *lot* of dedicated space needed for them if they’re used en masse. Dutch cities have massive, dedicated bike parking places and bike stands built in everywhere, and it’s still often overcrowded.

I’m all for shifting from cars to bikes but it makes me wonder whether cars -> public transport might be a more achievable target :/ Do both, probably.

  24. Why don’t the accounts used get charged huge amounts for every hour the bike is left in a non official spot?

  25. This is a cultural issue, the system works fine in other countries but for some reason in London people use the bikes/scooters like animals
