Eleven people were hospitalised after staff were evacuated from the Luxembourg site of tyre manufacturer Goodyear when a fire broke out on the premises on Monday afternoon.

Drivers were initially asked to avoid the area around Avenue Gordon Smith in Colmar-Berg following reports of a fire which broke out shortly before 14:00, the fire service said in a press release on Monday evening.

“On site, the firefighters were confronted with a fire that had impacted two production machines used to transform raw materials in the manufacture of tyres. The fire had also already spread to an adjacent filtering installation,” the CGDIS said in a press release.

Around 120 firefighters were deployed in order to tackle the blaze, the CGDIS said, with efforts ongoing until late afternoon to extinguish the blaze. A total of 23 employees were examined for potential smoke inhalation, with 11 people taken for more detailed checks at three hospitals across Luxembourg.
