    Panama President José Raúl Mulino firmly rejected President [Donald Trump](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/donald-trump)’s assertion, made during his inaugural speech on Monday, that the United States will “take back” the Panama Canal.

    In a statement shared on X (formerly [Twitter](https://www.newsweek.com/topic/twitter)), Mulino reaffirmed Panama’s sovereignty over the canal, emphasizing that the waterway will remain under Panamanian control in accordance with the Torrijos-Carter Treaty signed in 1977.

  17. I read somewhere that Trump’s company is being sued in Panama for non payment of taxes related to properties and hotel owned by them in Panama.

  18. When he says crazy stuff like this it usually means he wants the media to not focus on something else, and it always works. A statement like this means he’s either filling government positions with sycophants and stooges, and doesn’t want anyone to notice until it’s done, or he’s doing the opposite of something he promised his ravenous voter base, and doesn’t want them hearing about it. It’s literally all BS, every single thing that falls out of his putrid, fetid face sphincter is complete BS.

  19. Didn’t Panama build a new, wider canal next to the old one a few years ago for the specific purpose of accommodating larger container ships? While Trump’s delusions of conquest might apply to the old one, there’s nothing he can say that convinces me he has any authority over the new one.

    Panama Canal Treaty (1977): Signed by President Jimmy Carter and General Omar Torrijos, this treaty transferred control of the canal from the U.S. to Panama by December 31, 1999. It also ended the existence of the U.S.-controlled Canal Zone.

    Neutrality Treaty (1977): This treaty guarantees the canal’s permanent neutrality, allowing ships from all nations to use it. The U.S. retains the right to defend the canal to ensure its neutrality.

    2. We can defend it from enemies, but we can’t take it back, and trump knows this.

  28. I was in a gas station earlier and they had his speech on the TV. I heard someone (broadcaster) mentioning he’s going to reunite humanity, bring peace to everywhere etc and I couldn’t help but audibly laugh. There is few people who are the antithesis to those statements as he and his followers.

  32. In the treaty we signed it said we reserved rights to intervene militarily if the neutrality of the canal was compromised.
