Cyber attacks, climate deadlock and a Russia-Nato conflict all rank among European fund selectors’ biggest geopolitical fears for 2025, but strategic competition between the US and China is the top worry.

Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the US on Monday and although he chose not to make any immediate announcements about imposing tariffs on China, he said the US could slap 25% on Canada and Mexico from 1 February.

Even before his return to the White House, Trump has been making waves through proclamations on Panama, Canada and Greenland. This is not to mention his campaign pledge that brokering a peace deal in the Russia-Ukraine war would be a ‘Day One’ priority.
