He truly was terrible (as in awful), although his original Russian nickname (Ива́н Грозный) means Ivan the Fearsome, Ivan the Formidable.
E.g. in one fit of anger, he murdered his eldest son and heir, Ivan Ivanovich. On 15 November 1581, during a heated argument, Ivan struck his son on the head with his sceptre.
The younger Ivan fell, barely conscious and with a bleeding wound on his temple. The elder Ivan immediately threw himself at his son, kissing his face and trying to stop the bleeding, whilst repeatedly crying, “May I be damned! I’ve killed my son! I’ve killed my son!”
For the next few days, the elder Ivan prayed incessantly for a miracle, but to no avail, and the Tsarevich died on 19 November 1581.
This is exactly why i love this subreddit. You guys make such amazing art that amazes me so much. Congratultions OP, you have managed ot impress me.
This is soem painting.. ww.
this is that cats movie level of distrbing.
The expression in their faces, the details around… It’s like the painter had been there. Incredible!
The detail around Ivan’s eye’s is phenomenal.
Damn, those eyes…
Masterpiece painting.
Went to see Ilya Repin’s art at the Ateneum in Helsinki last summer. If you get the chance I highly recommend it. Repin was a true genius.
The real name of the painting is “Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan”. ” Killing his son” is a “folk name”.
Gopnik Ivan lol.
Is this painting as famous in Russia as it is in the internet?
