of course, purging of party members for even the perception of being too left wing isn’t pursuing political purity
I’ll vote Labour in the next election but I won’t be happy about it. Nothing Starmer says really speaks to me like Corbyn did. At least you knew what Corbyn stood for, whether you agreed with it or not.
I just want the Tories gone and I don’t care what it takes. The two-party system needs to die already. I love this country and I’m ashamed to have seen it destroyed by negligent and corrupt sociopaths.
We can’t win and we can’t achieve political purity, and we cannot do both.

My respect for this principle in the past is why I supported Starmer for leadership, despite being on the left of the Labour. My respect for this principle now is why I will never vote for Starmer’s Labour while he remains in power.
The actual gall of it to be elected on a false promise of broad church unity, to then immediately begin the most brutal campaign of intercenine factionalism in decades, and then come out and say this.
>We can win or we can pursue political purity
Particularly ironic in a speech to Scottish Labour because as long as the leadership insist on anti-independence candidates they’ll remain a non-entity in Scotland.
Also kinda funny that in an article talking about “political purity” there are multiple mentions of suspending MPs for signing letters and going to events. Complete inversion of reality.
What is the point of winning if you throw your values completely in the toilet? You are just giving Tories justification to go even further right if previously mainstream left values are treated as fringe.
I honestly just think most of them were never bothered about the stated goals of their party at all.
This is the precise problem with British politics- it’s only about winning.
I agree with this one, the general public are assholes!
So… He’s saying they’ve chosen political purity and are no longer trying to win elections?
Maggie would be proud of this one. Miles above Blair.
This is the truth that many do not want to believe
Political parties are so last century. We don’t need that crap, where we are going:)
He’s right.
With FPTP you keep purist ideals that help you sleep at night, lose, and are in no position to help anyone.
Or you compromise, win and have a chance at power.
A progressive alliance, get the Tories out and bring in proportional representation. But for the love of God just win by any means so you can actually make a difference.
If you lose on principles you still lose.
He’s literally just a liberal, not even a social democrat he believes in liberalism and defends all its institutions to the hilt. Literally just a us style democrat and nothing else.
People need to stop pretending he’s anything other than that. He won’t improve your lives because fundamentally that’s not what he cares about, he’s a liberal.

You can if you don’t give up. The media can only polish this turd of a situation the world and this country is in for so long. Offering no chance is worse than offering actual change. All this guy will do if he gets power is continue Tory policies for the benefit of the rich.
It’s like people on here want MPs who are electoral poison. Sure, push Corbyn, Abbott and Sultana but also be ready to never see a Labout government.
Considering that the conservative party has given the opposition more ammunition than anyone could possibly have hoped for and it’s still close, I for one see it as an impossibility that labour win when election time comes around.
this reads to me as “if you can’t persuade people respect and believe in your policies, make your policies what people like to believe in”. it’s fucking pathetic.
so basically admitting you’ll do whatever just to get elected, therefore admitting you stand for nothing? good show
Can we please fuck off the first-past-the-post system already?
You won’t win if only centralists will vote for you though
People complain that both sides are the same and that neither side represents them. Trouble is that parties that legitimately want to push change don’t get voted in.
The only way to fix this political stagnation is a change in voting system away from the archaic ‘First past the post’ system. Which the current government obviously won’t change, because the left is fragmented and it’s easy seats for the Tories
‘political purity’ is a weird way to spell ‘basic standards’. If you don’t have that, then you’re quite literally useless.
So he admits he’s going to win by being the Conservatives in red ties. At least he’s honest.
So is this version of Labour still ‘New Labour’ or is it considered going back to ‘Old Labour’….
This one statement should surely be the grand reveal as to what Starmer is all about.
It’s a gaslighting technique straight out of a dystopian novel.
The man is completely obsessed with power and has shown himself to be a liar with an authoritarian streak.
We are in for a few awful years and our political class aren’t interested in helping at all
This is so disingenuous. Nobody is asking for political purity we literally just don’t want red tie tories.
“Tony Blair and New Labour. We forced our opponents to change their minds.” – Maggie Thatcher
I’m not voting for that shit.
I mean I’m a traditionally right leaning voter who would love any excuse to vote Labour in the next election. I can’t stand Boris as a human being to be honest, so any opposition leader that isn’t a wet mob is going to get my vote.
Starmer has already shown more integrity than Boris (though that isn’t exactly setting the bar high).
“We can actually be labour or we could admit we’ve become Tory”
There fixed it for you mr starmer
You call it “pursuing political purity”; I call it “having no recognisable ideals”.
Keir: have you had enough of losing yet.
Labour: Yes
Keir: Ok
Left wingers on reddit: no we love it, fuck off with your actual chance of something actually being achieved! Winning is just a sign your a capitalist!
