  1. A Royal Navy attack submarine surfaced close to a Russian spy ship off the UK coast in an extraordinary warning to stop spying on British undersea cables, the defence secretary has revealed.

John Healey, in a highly unusual statement to MPs, said the incident involving HMS Astute happened in November but the research vessel, called Yantar, then returned to UK waters this week.

To counter the first spying mission, which passed through Cornish waters, he said he changed the navy’s rules of engagement to enable British warships and the submarine to get closer to the vessel and better track its activities.

It is very rare for the UK to reveal details about the movement of its top secret fleet of nuclear-powered submarines.

A decision to tell parliament that one of the submarines had surfaced next to the surveillance vessel underlines the extreme seriousness that the UK views the Russian activity back in November and again this week.

  2. Props to the Royal Navy. I think it’s the only way to deal with Russia.

  3. “You probe with bayonets: if you find mush, you push. If you find steel, you withdraw”

The UK showed steel. Well done!

  4. Well I hope they fucking shit themselves. That’s better than a strongly worded letter of condemnation.

  5. Imagine if the Russians received a message saying, “tally ho lads!”

  6. ”WAH! Blyat, almost gave me a heart attack… krhom, I mean, of kourse ve knev it vas there all along.”

  7. There is a long history of UK subs confronting the Soviet and Russian Navy. It’s well known for its aggressive tactics, stealth and the Perisher course is the best submarine command course recognised the world over.

    They do not f’around.

  8. Why can’t they just take the ship and arrest all on board? Coming all the way there to spy on UK infrastructure shouldn’t be tolerated

  9. Sounds like “this is our last warning”. good. Next time make them fly

  10. What do you call a dog in a submarine?

    A subwoofer

  11. I remember a Type 45 going to the Black Sea about 10-15 years ago with a Channel 5 documentary crew on board. Russia repeatedly “buzzed” it with dozens of fighter planes. I’m thinking 90 ish. With it being the largest “sortie” on a Royal Navy vessel since WW2.

We could do with playing a lot more hardball then just showing an SSN to them. When their aircraft come over here, we stay a safe “professional” distance away. When we go over there, they like to have their fighters get as close as possible.

Let’s make them shit their pants.

  12. We need to start sinking Russian ships that does this. And if Russia complains, we feign ignorance like they always do.

  13. All these shadow fleet ships should simply be sunk. Not in a show of force, but maybe accidentally when nearing their “not their home” ports. The “front falling off” happens from time to time naturally afterall.

  14. Sometimes European responses to Russian threats seem incredibly passive but every once in a while a story like this surfaces to remind us theres a lot going on that the public isnt always aware of.

  15. I was hoping it went directly beneath the ship and gave them a nice and loud ping with the active sonar

  16. I feel like the next step is commissioning a 50ft Anthony Gormley middle finger statue, attaching a large magnet and surreptitiously attaching it to their hull.

  17. Chad move would have been to surface, and then setup a table and have afternoon tea and scones while staring very angrily at them.

  18. Britannia rules the waves! Show them the ol British lion still has teeth

  19. Board them for a Customs and Excise search for drugs or people trafficking, with a couple of ELINT qualified personnel mixed in undercover, and give them something to think about…

  20. I love my brothers from UK. 🇨🇦🤝🇬🇧
