  1. Are they banning all ICE cars, or just petrol and diesel? The article is rather unclear about the fate of CNG.

  2. I mean… prices are getting lower but that still comes with huge downsides for now.

Not enough points to load them (especially in cities) and very limited range (for the cheaper models, you know, for regular joe without a company car) are still breaking points for me… It’s not like I do tons of km every year (around 5K), but it saves so much time when I do.

At least it’s ambitious, they can tackle problem one if they want to so we can get of that hurdle. I only wonder where they will put them. nearly all public parking spots have been torn apart around here.

If you don’t own a home with your own loading capacity, it’ll become pretty hard to use one of those things for the first 10 or so years.

  3. Ambitious but terribly easy to promise this without thinking about all the side effects and requirements.

Still waiting for the ambitious plan and its execution to charge all these electric vehicles with our electric grid.

Also, just 3 years between new cars and second hand cars? How delusional are these people?

  4. Don’t worry, if you are rich you can still afford this expansive electrical car. Climate change measurements are only for the plebs like you.

  5. Yeah, first they milk us with fuel taxes, now we can’t own affordable cars either

    Fuck. Off.

Ambitieus about nothing but when it comes to screwing people over…

  6. Add in their idea for forced energy renovations even for people currently owning a house (so not just: if you buy a house). They can bulldozer Bruges to start with.

This is just cheap ass virtue signaling due to the climate top in Glasgow. Wait until the elections…

  7. Will our power net be able to handle such an uprise in electric cars?

I’ve heard stories (perhaps a monkey sandwich story) about a street with a lot of electric cars and they need to agree on when to charge their car because the net can’t handle it.

  8. Vlaanderen …

The country is already small enough and we here with all our wealth will solve the world climate problem by having EV cars … in half of the country faster than everyone else.

Tell me our future is fucked without telling me.

  9. so, how about that energy crisis, huh?

In fact, forget about that. What about the vast majority of people that don’t have their own parking spot in front of their house. How are we supposed to keep an electrical car charged?

  10. People who think everyone will own a car in the future doesn’t see the signs on the wall. Even without ev transition.

Using a car for a single person is such a waste of energy. Moving 2 tons just to transport an 80kg body is beyond ridiculous.

Alternatives like speed pedelec an electric motorcycles are already here.

Car sharing will become a thing for everybody.

    Etc

  11. This is simply bullshit. All those gorgeous gas and diesel cars, all bound to disappear because of these retards. Imagine people who’ve always wanted to own a Ferrari, and then boom, this useless government bans them. 2030 even 2nd hand cars are banned, absolutely brainless individuals.

  13. Lots of work to do then. I live in an apartment in Deurne and there’s like 4 chargers in the entire district which are generally always taken by random Autodelen cars. Can’t get a charger in front of my door either.

  15. I just can’t accept that these decisions are taken while there is no concertation and no general consensus of the citizens, while these people are supposed to represent our interests.

Everybody fighting for EVs, we will discuss this once it’s implemented and you will have to ask for a mortgage to your bank to pay your electricity bill. (We have already been scammed with the removal of night rates for our electricity and nobody moved a finger to contest that).

On macro scale, we are cutting off our both feet once the Gaz centrals will be functional. Our newbie politicians don’t know a damn about politics compared to Putin who has been in power for over 20 years now. Write down my words, this is exactly how it will go:

    1) Belgium (EU) opens Gaz centrals and has to buy the Gaz to produce the electricity
    2) Russia comes in as favorite supplier with most relevant prices at the moment when the contract is signed
    3) Time passes and Putin is not happy with X thing
    4) Putin starts pressuring all countries buying his Gaz to fulfill his X will otherwise he will increase the prices
    5) EU politicians/Belgian comply as they are afraid to loose voters
    6) Power win for Putin + prices which increase anyway on longer term

If you believe that Putin is too old and might give up before, don’t jump too easily on that conclusion. KGB grip to the power is strong.

  16. So what to do with the current relatively fresh new car in 2030? Can’t sell it here, export to foreign country? Such a waste of money for middle class & below.

  17. If you ask me, it should even be sooner. On the other hand, I’m quite intrigued on how they are going to manage all practical problems in this short timeframe. A lot of things are going to need to change to accommodate EV’s on that scale. I already have a neighbour running a long extension cord to charge his car during the night because he doesn’t has a drive-way. How this can possibly be solved in cities where only few people have fixed parking spots is still a mystery to me.

  18. Can they stop pushing climate change reforms on the population with low impact and actually tackle the issues?

  19. Friend of mine who is on his 2nd EV just hates them (but did get one due to fiscal gain for his company).
If he wants to go to the beach for a day (living in Schilde) he can’t do a return trip. Even though the car is empty and it’s all highway he’s driving.

In this case he has to make surd there is a charging spot available at the beach otherwise he’s f*cked.

I remain skeptical and the gains do not outweight the negative aspects just yet. Those who have the financial means can benefit from all the extra’s, and by the time it’s mainstream all those benefits will be void.

  20. How disconnected are these people from reality? Generally 18K is spend on a new car on average for who can afford a new car. How are they going to “force” everyone to spend more ( an EV is typically double?). Not all of us make 6900 euro nett per month with a “ziektebriefke” 🙂

  22. It’s good that we are moving towards car that emit less, but then they really have to emit less, and not secretly through the chimney of a gas plant. Otherwise it’s just not worth it, and a major favor towards the car industry.

The old cars will be shipped to the horn of Africa or other developing nations, where people will use them for years to come. It doesn’t matter for the climate if you pollute in Belgium or in Nigeria.

  23. When the article can predict the comments.

    > Burgers hebben volgens Verhelle ook nog niet helemaal de mentale klik gemaakt. De industrie wel.

For once the governement is ambitious about the climate and takes into account some important side effects (prices of EV’s being equal to ICE’s in 2026), but here come the eternal complainers. I’d rather have the governement be ambitious but not 100% make it, then constantly “slabakken” and getting nothing of worth done.

  24. Skyrocketing electricity prices incoming !!

So they think the infrastructure will be ready in 5 yrs for this ? wow !! 2072 maybe

  25. So they are flat-out banning hybrids. I understand they want to get rid of these ‘fake hybrids’ that just run on gas and have a really small battery. But they could just enforce a minimum range for the battery part and require the plug-in option. This would still keep the door open for EV’s with a small range extender. The range extender wouldn’t even have to provide much power, the entire car would have limited performance when the battery is drained. That alone would be enough motivation for people to actually charge the hybrid from the wall.

But flat-out banning entire types of technology is usually not a good way to go.

  26. I am concerned for the lower – middle income families, especially those who live in a city. Unless they’re placing EV chargers everywhere, tons of people who live in appartement buildings have to put their car somewhere that may or may not be close to their home.

I hope Hydrogen cars kick off instead of battery powered electric cars, or something better than that. Charging time and limited availability is a sore spot.

The fact that cars can be charged at home is only beneficial to those who can install a charging point or an extension cable to their car. Mostly people with houses.

That being said, most people from those classes won’t buy a new car. Especially not an EV. For the public’s sake, I hope by the time we can’t buy gas powered cars, the ‘carbon free’ energy infrastructure has developed far enough that those who have it the most difficult also have the opportunity to charge without having to park their car blocks away from their home.

Speed and availability need a huge upgrade.

  27. Once again, we are all experts on this topic. But the thing is : real experts think about solutions instead of making a big problem of every little bump along the way to zero emission.

For example :Charging points : really, this would be a problem ? We live in the world’s most lit country. If we can install a public light every 200m stretch of road, don’t you think we can’t install enough charging points ? Technically this is **No challenge.**

If you have a place to park you have a place to install a charging point.

Don’t you think this is a great economic opportunity ?

  28. >maar er zelf in blijven rijden mag wel.

Has anyone thought about the impact on the car mechanic profession btw? As there will possibly be a gradual rise in demand of people who can keep those ICE cars alive as long as possible whereas normally you would just replace them.

  29. Let’s start with investing to get the best public transport in Europe. It can all be electric and people drive less if they make it free. Problem solved for personal transport. And I think vans and trucks ( specially custom build ones) need different measurements to make a fast switch to electric.

  30. instead of trying to keep more and more cars on the road, we should be taking them off of the road. nothing decreases car emissions more than not owning or using a car at all. making an EV will still cause tons and tons of emissions. and it won’t fix any congestion on the road if we keep as Kuch cars on it as we do now.

  31. Uhm, how is banning second hand car sales going to end up impacting the classic car/oldtimer scene? Sounds like people will no longer be able to buy/sell those either starting in 2030.

And at the same time, our government [makes it pretty much impossible](https://www.autogids.be/autonieuws/editoriaal/en-de-oudjes-2021.html) to have an electric conversion done on an existing ICE car. These kits have existed for years and are perfectly legal in our neighboring countries, but our byzantine homologation system makes it almost impossible here.
