James O’Brien’s brutal assessment of the UK’s treatment of Ukrainian refugees

  1. > There are approximately 5 million people in the Republic of Ireland. They’ve already taken in 1,250 refugees. In a country with a population closer to 70 million, we’ve taken in 50. Why? Because Priti Patel’s refugee policy is working perfectly. It’s not a mistake, it’s not an anomaly, it’s not a consequence of unforeseen circumstances, it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.

Hard to argue with. The policy appears designed very specifically to make it look like we’re doing something, while at the same time making it as hard as possible for Ukrainian refugees to get here.

  2. Yet many people agree with the Government actions.

The amount of people I keep hearing saying “If we let people from the Ukraine in were will it stop”

  3. Time for my opinion

So I think yes we do need a cap on the amount of Refugees but that cap should be in the hundreds of thousands

We need to start taking second homes off anyone who has one take over empty properties that have been empty for more than say six months and start housing both are own people and refugees

We also need to start building more homes and telling the Nimbys to shut the fuck up because even if their house prices fall 20% they still have made a profit

The major difference I can see between Ukraine and the Middle East and Africa is that 1) we know where their coming from and fleeing from 2) their more culturally aligned with us 3) their mostly women and children not fighting age men 4) its is our geopolitical interest to help them win against Russia and safeguarding their women and children well they fight is a good way to help them

  4. If we didn’t have such a criminally low housing stock this wouldn’t be necessary. The Tories are hell bent on not letting anyone in because they don’t have a surplus of state owned social housing to use. They sold them. All a Ukrainian refugee can look forward to is being accommodated in a camp. This will not look very good internationally.
The Ukrainians are probably much better off avoiding our despicable hostile environment.

  5. Its incredibly sad but depressingly predictable to see whats happening here. From a policymaking standpoint a harsh “keep em out” angle is mainstream and desirable now from Tory HQs perspective.

We are talking about voters who smirk into their newspaper when people drown in the channel and puff out their cheeks in fury when they manage to make it to the UK here.

This is literally the mainstream Tory voter perception of immigration of any kind. These people voted to leave the EU because Polish accents made them feel a bit awkward when travelling on the train. Thats the mindset that prevails and is being pondered to from the top.

Its pathetic but welcome to the UK 12 years into a Tory government.

I just wish we here in Scotland can let in the thousands that rUK are slapping in the face.

  6. Everyone wants to slag Britain off whist risking life and limb to live there, the hipocrisy of some people.

  7. I’m trying to get my mrs a visa and there is a shit ton of work to do and money to spend. I think relaxing the laws overall would be grand.

  8. The public has had plenty of anti-Eastern European immigration bollocks forced down its throat over the last twenty years to garner support for Patel and her policy. People are happy to keep up our hostile environment, even during a war in Europe, they still think immigration is something to be feared and a humanitarian crisis is not going to change that. We turned away Jewish refugees, including children, during WW2; this is not new behaviour from us. It may be 80 years later but we are still the same sort of people we were back then and we will once again fail to learn from history.
