I'm (dual German/US citizen) getting married to my fiancé (US citizen) this summer in the US, and am looking into obtaining a German marriage certificate afterward. I have a German passport and Staatsangehörigkeitsausweis.

Looking at the registration guide here, it looks like we'll need our US-issued marriage certificate (will get an apostille stamp)

  1. Is an official translation of the US-issued marriage certificate needed also?

  2. I had trouble with my US birth certificate during the Staats- application process because my birth certificate only stated a county (instead of a city) as place of birth. I had to provide a Proof of Birth letter alongside the birth certificate (see the note in this page). We will also be getting married in a county — will this be an issue when I submit my US-issued marriage certificate?

  3. Do I need apostille for my fiancé's birth certificate and previous divorce paperwork?

Thank you!

  1. We had apostilles for all paperwork (birth certificates, marriage license, and in your case the divorce decree), and official translations of everything. Everything was accepted without problems.

  2. Why do you want to do this?

Getting a German marriage cert does not make much sense unless you plan to move to Germany in the very near future – and if that is the case, you’d better off waiting until after the move and deal with your local Standesamt rather than with Standesamt I. Standesamt I slower than a turtle, they have average processing times of 2+ years.
