Ukraine war: UK grants 50 Ukrainian refugee visas so far

  1. 50 is better than none, but a lot less than the 5.5k who have applied.

Let’s just hope the claimed relaxing of rules is actually genuine.

  2. Apparently Patel has changed her view after visiting Poland. Because apparently her alien reptilian brain was unable to comprehend moving pictures on a tv screen or words spoken to her by military and humanitarian experts. She had to go over there and taste the desperation with her forked tongue.

The misery she tasted has satiated her appetite for a bit. So actual people can take over while she sleeps.

  3. I am surprised that they have granted any. They could just say it is not safe to process visas in Ukraine and let them all rot in a pile as usual.

  4. The UK government policy in this is an absolute disgrace. The EU is offering visa free access to both live and work for 3 years to all Ukrainian citizens, and we’ve offered a paltry 50 visas and make it difficult for refugees from the war to legally enter the UK.

Anyone involved in this decisions should be ashamed of themselves.

And anyone who disagrees must write to their local representative (MP, MSP etc). We are all responsible if we don’t apply pressure to change this wicked policy.

  5. 50 is better than the none I expected at least. I assumed she would just leave them all to drown in the channel like she’s been doing with refugees from other countries for years.

  6. This government constantly finds new and novel ways to be an absolute disappointment to everything and everyone.

What an absolute softball they’ve missed. He could have had some nice little photo ops with the new arrivals like the media-hungry troll he is and it would have been such easy PR. Now they’re going to go down as the nasty party that turned away the Ukrainians in their hour of need. I don’t even think the Daily Mail readers can forgive this…

  7. We started the Visa scheme last Friday and it’s now Monday. With the weekend in between.
Let’s see how it goes in a week.
But then evidence and reality don’t matter actually matter too much on this sub.

  8. On top of that pathetic number we have the Home Secretary scaremongering by claiming that ‘extremists’ or Russian troops could be disguised as refugees.

  9. What happened to the “Refugees should seek refuge in the first safe country” kinda of talk. I personal disagree with this and think all countries should take their fair share including rich Arab countries, I’m just annoyed at the selective sympathy in this country.

  10. Utterly deplorable.

Please god can we just get a general election and bury the Tory party once and for all… O want to be represented by people with some sense of morality and humanity.

  11. Would be so nice to do a straight swap – every Ukrainian who wants to live in UK very welcome, and for each one that comes a Tory politician, counsellor, donor or voter is sent to a bunker somewhere close to Odessa.

  12. Fucking hell man, I’ve got 4 in my apartment at the minute, almost 10% of what the entirety of the UK is willing to take…

  13. My wife has been waiting 10 months for her spousal visa, our government workers are pathetically incapable of being efficient.

  14. We have around 2,000 refugees per week coming from Hong Kong, so it’s not fair to say we always close up shop to those in need. We’ve let in thousands of Afghanis too.

We just don’t really have a historical relationship with Ukraine the same way we do with HK and Afghanistan, so perhaps that’s why the numbers are low.

  15. To think that that it was the same party that allowed the kindertransport to bring Jewish children to the UK from Nazi Germany. Neville Chamberlain eventually said that there would be no hinderance to any Jewish child that came across and that is how it should be.

Immigration rules are made to be observed at stable or slightly unstable times and exceptions have to be allowed during a crisis. There are no rules in war as we can clearly see from what is happening in Ukraine. If a politician can’t use common sense during a crisis, it begs the question as to why they occupy a seat with tremendous responsibility.

  16. Given we’re not a bordering country, what number of Ukrainian refugees are people expecting the UK to take?

  17. One method of granting visas for Ukrainians is for someone in the UK to sponsor them. How many of you have offered to sponsor someone so far?

  18. The Tories are in a bit of a fix here. How do they let white refugees in but at the same time keep the darker skinned ones out.

  19. If I was one of the 50 I’d be a little concerned, wondering if I’d made the right choice coming here. Patel and the rest of her mob are positively shameful.

Lucky for her she wasn’t around when she and her family fled Amin.
