My great-great-grandfather was born in Bulgaria, approx. between 1880-1890. As a young man he arrived to Romania, to Targu Mures, with several others to be a farmer/gardener. That is where he met my great-great-grandma, Rozália Havadi. The family knows his name too, Ion/Ioan Danila, although this is probably the Romanian version of his name, I think he could have been Danilov – if that is an existing name in Bulgarian.
His children are dead, his grandchildren are in their late 70’s, 80’s. They remember him speaking Bulgarian, and passing away in the second half of the 1960’s. They don’t know exactly which part of Bulgaria he came from, and if he had any family left there.
Can you give me any tips on where should I start looking for more info on him? A national archive or church books maybe? Archives on immigration? Can I get in touch with authorities for this matter?
Or if any of you recognize anyone on the pictures, or finds this story familiar, that would be an added bonus if not a miracle. Thank you!

Without the place of birth or any official Bulgarian document, I’m afraid you are out of luck.
At that time the only reliable archives were church and military ones. Church ones were heavily decentralized. That is why the place of birth could give you some leads. Military archives could be useful in case of rare names. But you are not sure about the family name and the first is not that rare in Bulgaria.
