  1. Good for them. They are a prime target of a nasty, vile man aiming to be a dictator. Honestly I hope more states follow. I for one am all on board with this movement. We can’t live in fear of Trump and his cult. They don’t want us here, and they will seemingly do what it takes to make lives of anyone who doesn’t agree with them (or hell, even the people that do agree with them but have their heads so far up Trumps’s ass) significantly harder for their own gain and whims

  2. >According to the guidelines, “If at least 50% of registered voters participate in that election, and at least 55% vote “yes,” it would constitute “a vote of no confidence in the United States of America” and “expression of the will of the people of California” to become an independent country but would not change California’s current government or relationship with the United States.”

OK, so nothing happens? Awesome, sounds like a great use of the $12 million they say it would cost.

  3. Where do I sign? We’d be a country with the 6th largest economy. The US needs us much more than we need them.

  4. This is a repeat of 2019’s unsuccessful “Yes California” effort. The leader of this measure was VP of that PAC. It’s a divisive distraction, can’t happen, and Putin likes it.

“Yes California is a Californian political action committee that promotes the Independence of the state of California from the United States.

It was founded in 2015 by Louis J. Marinelli, a right-wing political activist, and its efforts have been supported by the Russian government.”

  5. Everyone chiming in to support this is falling hook line and sinker for a Russian attack.

  6. This would absolutely doom the US. Democrats would lose the 54 electoral votes and republicans will seize the government for decades to come.

  7. No state can leave the union, that was established after the civil war. I would however be curious what would happen if California just stopped paying federal income tax as a state. Trump wants to withhold aid? Fine, take the federal income tax and redirect it to state aide. California pays far more in than any other state, that would hurt the southern states that barely contribute anything

  8. I would not support secession but maybe California, Oregon, and Washington should create a interstate pact and start working together on our own free medical program, high speed trains from Seattle to San Diego multi state firefighting force and its own Fema program.

  9. Why would the GOP fight this? Losing California, Oregon and Washington would take away a lot of Democratic Party representatives and electoral votes.

  10. While i would love to not be apart of the descent in fascism this move can only lead to one thing and it will not be good

  11. How about all the California representatives and Senators support a 0% federal tax. With every California democrat on board I bet some Republicans would join in. And that would be more effective than secession. No more federal funding and the states have to make it on our own.

  12. They should take New York (where I’m from) with them. Every blue state needs to escape from Trump before it’s too late.

  13. Canadian here. Join us and we’ll give you better healthcare!

  14. Washington, Oregon, and California should form the Western Alliance.

  15. We need to figure out a way to achieve a national divorce of sorts. That is the only discussion I want to have about politics going forward. It is clear as day that things are getting worse and worse. Democrats and leftists have lost. The right wing is quickly controlling the entire social media apparatus at an alarming rate. Very soon they will control the entire narrative and discourse with little to no opposition, and nobody who is going to be able to do anything about it even if they do oppose. Do not assume or think that BlueSky is safe. They will eventually sell out, capitulate, or be taken over somehow as well to the right wing. They are already trying to follow us there because they do not want us to have any space to ourselves at all away from them. Bluesky might be friendly to leftists right now, but that doesn’t guarantee it’s going to always be that way or that Trump and company won’t do something to force them to open up more to conservatives.

I do not claim to have a crystal ball to explain in perfect detail how the logistics of a national divorce would work or how it would go down. I just want to plant the seed in everyone’s head, get the discourse started, and figure out a way that conservatives and leftists can come together one last time to figure out a way to separate.

It is clear as day that we absolutely loathe and despise each other. I’ll be frank, I absolutely hate conservatives with every fiber of my being, and I know many of them feel the same way. I will not be happy in this country until I do not have to share it with them anymore. I know they also feel the same way about that. I know there are also many on both sides who would be more than happy if they would be allowed to shed the other sides blood. This isn’t sustainable long-term, and it’s going to get ugly.

We need to peacefully figure out a way to separate and be done with each other. This is like a bad marriage, it can’t go on. Sometimes the only option is to walk away. We’ve tried literally everything. Facts and science do not matter. Calm, rational, peaceful debate does not work. Nothing works. Our conservative opponents do not believe in the peer-review process, they think that every institution is flawed, biased, and operates in bad faith to benefit leftists. You cannot have rational conversations with people if this is the mindset that they hold. Left leaning people try to operate under objective facts and peer-reviewed studies and evidence, while the other side has dismissed the validity of the one method that humanity has devised to best ascertain objective truths since humanity began. Conservatives now operate under a postmodernist ideology, this is incompatible with people who operate their lives based on empirical evidence.

The two ideologies are far too incompatible to reconcile. Non American Democratic health analysts have said as much, that it is unlikely for the two ideologies to ever be able to work together again.

The writing is on the wall and everyone is just too afraid to admit it out loud. Nobody wants to go through the hardship, hard work, logistics, and pain that will be caused by a national divorce. I understand it will be hard. I understand families will be split up. I understand livelihoods will be ruined in the short term. I understand that many sacrifices will have to be made.

I believe it is better to rip off this Band-Aid now and get it figured out. Future generations will thank us. I will say we aren’t going to agree on everything, but at the very least we will be able to have neighbors, peer groups, and neighbors who generally agree with our sensibilities and moral values. There will always be disagreements on some of the smaller things, and that’s okay. The issue here is that so many core beliefs are so vastly different that there is no compromise on these things for either side.

In closing, let’s figure out a peaceful way to make this happen. Let’s do it in a legal way, in a way that best makes sense, in a way that avoids bloodshed. I am willing to give up my creature comforts, all of my money, everything I’ve ever had to make this a reality. I don’t want future generations to have to go through this bullshit anymore. I want them to be able to grow up in a place they are proud of that values decency, civility, care and concern for others, a place where bullying isn’t rewarded, a place where people can express themselves, be who they are, love who they want, have universal health care, have a good education based on empirical science and peer review, have their own bodily autonomy to make their own bodily decisions as they see fit, worship or not worship a God, etc.

  16. Maybe we can switch California for Greenland and we can be Danes! The most happy people. Trump is ruining this country.

  17. CA residents should pay US income tax into a California controlled “escrow” account, and the state will deliver the check to the IRS. This would provide huge leverage.

  18. As a Californian support this. We have our own culture, values, industry and economy.

Plus Our flag is 10x cooler than the Stars and Stripes

  19. If California was a separate nation, how would the welfare states of the Midwest and Southeast pay for all their natural disasters and every other federal service and benefit they receive?

Edit: actually almost every red state except Texas

  20. Looking from the outside, I’ve feared for a while that this might be the end result of a Trump presidency. It feels like the US is too big and too divided to stay together, and given that California alone would be the 4th/5th biggest economy in the world and a major global power in its own right, it does beg the question why they should put up with a permanent Trump/GOP presidency if the US right get their way.

I obviously hope this doesn’t happen. A US that can move past Trump and return to its role as the world’s leading superpower would be ideal for everyone who isn’t Vladimir Putin or the Chinese Communist Party – but it feels like we’re seeing the fall of Rome playing out in modern times, almost.

  21. Yes, as a New Yorker I want to see this happen. I want California to take their tax money and stop sending it to people who want to harm them.

If they can leave, other blue states can too. I’d love to see NY->Maine peace out as well.

  22. Nah, don’t make us independent.

Pull our tax revenues back to state coffers rather than national and let the red states feel the keen lack of Californian money. See how they like that.
