This has absolutely nothing to do with the economy.
If we take a step back a moment.
The idea of a nation-state is only a few centuries old. Most of the world was chopped up and allocated flags and borders for the convenience of the rich. (I’m reminded on the rock climber that said, “I’ve climbed mountains all over the world, and I’ve never seen a border).
Most of that chopping was done based on resources. Wheat and wood, fuel and metals and minerals.
During this time Greenland was inaccessible, and some how [help from any historians here?] became owned by the Danes. I’d guess because they were pretty good at boats and harsh environments.
We are now in a new world order. The order and borders that were arrived at post WWII are no longer as relevant. The ice caps are retreating and making that land more accessible, and it has lots of resources to exploit.
I’m not trying to say it’s right or wrong, but the world is reshaping itself (as Russia-Ukraine and Brexit both demonstrated) and from a strategic perspective for the West, having that land controlled and developed by the world biggest economy kind of makes sense. I don’t think we should continue being surprised at this stuff.
(I’m not immune to the fact that the way Orange T has gone about it is shocking but again, are we really surprised?).
